Book Description

May 15, 2012 Doctor Who
Freema Agyeman reads this gripping story of a lost ship, a time loop, and dangerous pirates. The Doctor's been everywhere (and everywhen) in the universe, and seems to know all the answers. But ask him what happened to the Starship Brilliant and he hasn't the first idea. Did it fall into a sun or black hole? Was it shot down in the first moments of the galactic war? And what's this about a secret experimental drive? The Doctor is skittish, but if Martha is so keen to find out he'll land the TARDIS on the Brilliant, a few days before it vanishes. Then they can see for themselves. Soon the Doctor learns the awful truth. And Martha learns that you need to be careful what you wish for. She certainly wasn't hoping for mayhem, death, and badger–faced space pirates. Featuring the Doctor and Martha as played by David Tennant and Freema Agyeman in the hit BBC series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Quick Read, March 19, 2008
The tie-in novels for Doctor Who can be hit and miss. They're quick reads - at about 230 pages and in a larger font, it usually only takes about 2 hours to read start to finish. They're a fun escape on a boring work lunch. However, at $11.99 (suggested retail) they can be a bit of a monetary commitment that can go sour if the story turns out mediocre.

The story here does have a slight juvenile bent to it, simply because of the nature of the pirates and some of characterization and comedic accents. However, I found these touches to be charming and not too silly. The plot itself moves along quickly, with a central mystery that keeps things interesting. It's fairly clever (though don't think about it TOO much or holes will start to appear) without being too convoluted.

The characterization also really shines, and Martha and the Doctor feel right and in line with their on-screen personas.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite movie is Groundhog's Day, December 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Well, no, not really, but I really enjoy it. And this book is a great parallel for that given that the plot (NO SPOILERS, I promise) revolves around a time loop. I love it when an author can visit the same circumstances over and over and make it fresh every time. This is a special sub-sub-genre of science fiction.

The characters and conundrums are engaging and legitimately tension-filled. The Doctor and Martha are very ably captured.
