Book Description

Doctor Who (BBC Hardcover)
Earth, 2099. Globabl warming is devastating the climate. The polar ice caps are melting. In a desperate attempt at preservation, the governments of the world have removed vast sections of the Arctic and Antarctic and set them inside huge domes across the world. The Doctor and Martha arrive in Snowglobe 7 in the Middle East, hoping for peace and relaxation. But they soon discover that it's not only ice and snow that has been preserved beneath the Dome. While Martha struggles to help with an infection sweeping through the Dome, the Doctor discovers an alien threat that has lain hidden since the last ice age - a threat that is starting to thaw! Featuring the Doctor and Martha as played by David Tennant and Freema Agyeman in the hit series from BBC Television.

3.0 out of 5 stars More of the Same, October 24, 2008

I find that the present Doctor Who novels are bland. Maybe I'm biased, but I really enjoyed The New Adventures and many of the Eighth Doctor novels which had more depth and were more challenging for the reader. Maybe they need to use new authors? Or is the fault of the editor? This book just left me cold and wishing for something different.

Loved the idea of big domes with a winter world on a sunny beach. Very creative.

3.0 out of 5 stars Preachy but readable, January 6, 2011
This review is from: Doctor Who: Snowglobe 7 (Doctor Who (BBC Hardcover)) (Hardcover)
The fashionable nonsense of global warming -that comic modern shibboleth-lurks at the heart of this proficient ,if somehat didactic Doctor Who novel .It takes place in the eponymous structure ,built in the heart of Dubai and designed as an holiday resort for the idle rich .It also houses snow from the (allegedly)melting Polar ice caps ,preserved as an an act of conservation.Unfortunately, the snow is home to a race of telepathic ,spider like creatures ,the Gappa ,who are woken from a long hibernation and set about devouring any mortals unfortunate enough to get in their way.Complicating matters is the fact that any form of contact with them also brings on a potentially fatal illness .While the Doctor's assistant ,Dr Martha Jones and the medical staff of the facility battle the infection ,the Doctor tries to find a way to defeat the Gappa ,who are depicted as being more the victims of circumstance than a naturally vicious breed. He is aided in his task by an engaging -if mercifully non cute-robot and tries to avoid having to kill them .(He is in linear line of descent from those tedious souls in the science fiction movies of the past who always wanted to "communicate" with invading aliens ,and whose demose was always so pleasurable!)

As an action novel it works well and stays true to the characters as depicted in the TV series but it does get a little sanctimonious and inclined to lecture its audience at times. But then that's the BBC (Biased Broadcasting Corporation)for you .One for the fans ,only .
