True fans must own it. Others . . . not so much.,
By J. C. Roberts "The Mysterious Irresponsible Man" (Higashi-Hemi-Cho, Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Honshu, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch Flashlight (Toy)
Once upon a Time Lord, the Doctor had a trusty companion that could be counted upon to get him out of just about any scrape the show's writers cared to put him in. If a writer wrote himself into a corner, all the Doctor had to do was whip out his trusty Sonic Screwdriver (TM), which would inexplicably acquire some new function it had never exhibited before in the history of the show, and enable our hero to live to fight another day. Well, okay, maybe not quite like that, but you get the picture.
This replica is a toy, make no mistake about it. It's constructed of plastic. It makes no noise, only light, much to the relief of British parents everywhere, no doubt. It is about as faithful a replica as one could ask for, and I have it on reasonably decent authority that it's made well enough that the BBC keep a few copies on hand to stand in for the prop they originally constructed, which is notoriously fragile. The toy may arrive with a slightly wonky switch, as mine did, but it was easily set right by unscrewing and re-securing the battery compartment. It is visually faithful to the new look, but I personally feel that a AAA cell or two could have been used in place of the three button cells (watch batteries) the toy comes with. At the very least, it might have given the Sonic Screwdriver a little heft, perhaps helping it to feel not quite so cheap.

The 9th Doctors Screwdriver,

= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch Flashlight (Toy)
This is the 9th Doctors screwdriver. In series 1 of the new Doctor Who, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver is considerably smaller than the 10th Doctors (literally half size) and this is a very accurate reproduction.
The images here make it look fairly squat or fat, but the actual item is much leaner and looks exactly like the prop from the series. The LED is quite bright for such a small flashlight and the blue is very vibrant and screen accurate. Much like the Screwdriver on the series, it's not much of a light source. It's bright and can be used to find your keys in the dark or something similar, but it's nothing to use if the power goes out. A warning: don't shine it in anyone's eyes. It hurts. It does not make any sort of sounds or extend, which is to be expected. I think I annoyed my coworkers so much with the electronic driver they kidnapped it when I wasn't looking, so this silent one is a relief. There isn't much detail on the item and the blue line painted on the side is a little sloppy, but silver/gray paint is very well done and is convincingly metallic. The body is obviously plastic, though, and is too brightly colored and has no detail. It's quite pricy (averaging around $10+ new) so it's not really for the casual fan. But if you are a fan of props or a big fan of Doctor Who, especially of the 9th Doctor, get this item.

This review is from: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch Flashlight (Toy)
This toy has absolutely no real function and even less educational value but it's CUTE. And it's fun. And it lights up blue. It's probably for the best that it doesn't make any sort of noise because otherwise I'd be annoying people even more than I already am. If you're a Who fan, you really can't argue the price of this. I am now totally sonic'ed up.
