True fans must own it. Others . . . not so much.,
By J. C. Roberts "The Mysterious Irresponsible Man" (Higashi-Hemi-Cho, Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Honshu, Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch Flashlight (Toy)
Once upon a Time Lord, the Doctor had a trusty companion that could be counted upon to get him out of just about any scrape the show's writers cared to put him in. If a writer wrote himself into a corner, all the Doctor had to do was whip out his trusty Sonic Screwdriver (TM), which would inexplicably acquire some new function it had never exhibited before in the history of the show, and enable our hero to live to fight another day. Well, okay, maybe not quite like that, but you get the picture.
This replica is a toy, make no mistake about it. It's constructed of plastic. It makes no noise, only light, much to the relief of British parents everywhere, no doubt. It is about as faithful a replica as one could ask for, and I have it on reasonably decent authority that it's made well enough that the BBC keep a few copies on hand to stand in for the prop they originally constructed, which is notoriously fragile. The toy may arrive with a slightly wonky switch, as mine did, but it was easily set right by unscrewing and re-securing the battery compartment. It is visually faithful to the new look, but I personally feel that a AAA cell or two could have been used in place of the three button cells (watch batteries) the toy comes with. At the very least, it might have given the Sonic Screwdriver a little heft, perhaps helping it to feel not quite so cheap.

The 9th Doctors Screwdriver,

This is the 9th Doctors screwdriver. In series 1 of the new Doctor Who, the Doctor's sonic screwdriver is considerably smaller than the 10th Doctors (literally half size) and this is a very accurate reproduction.
The images here make it look fairly squat or fat, but the actual item is much leaner and looks exactly like the prop from the series. The LED is quite bright for such a small flashlight and the blue is very vibrant and screen accurate. Much like the Screwdriver on the series, it's not much of a light source. It's bright and can be used to find your keys in the dark or something similar, but it's nothing to use if the power goes out. A warning: don't shine it in anyone's eyes. It hurts. It does not make any sort of sounds or extend, which is to be expected. I think I annoyed my coworkers so much with the electronic driver they kidnapped it when I wasn't looking, so this silent one is a relief. There isn't much detail on the item and the blue line painted on the side is a little sloppy, but silver/gray paint is very well done and is convincingly metallic. The body is obviously plastic, though, and is too brightly colored and has no detail. It's quite pricy (averaging around $10+ new) so it's not really for the casual fan. But if you are a fan of props or a big fan of Doctor Who, especially of the 9th Doctor, get this item.

This toy has absolutely no real function and even less educational value but it's CUTE. And it's fun. And it lights up blue. It's probably for the best that it doesn't make any sort of noise because otherwise I'd be annoying people even more than I already am. If you're a Who fan, you really can't argue the price of this. I am now totally sonic'ed up.

My Little Dr. Who fan loves his sonic screwdriver. However is sad to discover it will not shut up his big brother. It's so hard to find Dr Who toys in the US, he was delighted. It's had several days of hard use, zapping pretend daleks, annoying the dog etc, and so far it has remained in one piece and in good operating condition.

I thought it was rather expensive for a plastic flashlight, but they (fake sonic screwdrivers) are hard to find here in the US. My 15 year old daughter, who is an avid Dr Who fan, thinks that it is great, so that's what counts. So on that count, I have to give a thumbs up! To bad they don't make these things with added bells and whistles.

This does not work like advertised on TV. I could not use it to unlock doors or to open my Tardis. Besides that it is great.

I have used this little "Sonic Screwdriver" to help me install items in my computer, fish something out of my purse, unlock my front door at night, read in the back of the car, look for items under my couch... when I first ordered it I was wondering why I'd just wasted my money but now I carry it with me in my purse because it's so useful as a little flashlight! The end fits perfectly between my front teeth for when I need both of my hands to do something (like working on that CPU) and the bright light gets into nooks and crannies that need light that a conventional flashlight wouldn't reach. No it doesn't make noise but that's okay, I can make the noise myself ;)

While this toy is by far my 7 year old son's most valued treasure, I am, as a parent, disappointed in its overall quality and durability. The plastic housing is not very strong and we've had to "operate" on it a couple of times to put it back in good working order. I have it set aside right now in order to try to glue the two pieces that form the outer stem of the "screwdriver handle" together to make it more sturdy. It is splitting at the seam, not "broken" per se, just showing wear after only about 3 weeks of play time.
The light is nice and bright, it's a good size for little hands, but for a boy who is loath to part with it, it could definitely be made in a more durable fashion.

Its a great flashlight, and you really feel like you could be the doctor when holding it.
The light is the same blue as the sonic screwdriver in the show, and the packaging has a legitimate holo from bbc.

This isn't really a prop or a toy. It's just a small flashlight that looks like the ninth and tenth Doctors' sonic screwdrivers.
It's a good deal smaller than the prop (a smidge over five inches long), has no moving parts, and makes no sound effects. It does make a very brilliantly blue light. It works pretty well as a flashlight. There are brighter ones out there, but they don't look like the sonic screwdriver, do they? I bought mine as a supplement to a really nice toy sonic screwdriver (Doctor Who - The Tenth Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver) after Dragon*Con this year. I was in a Firefly drinking songs panel and during one song a number of Doctor cosplayers held up sonic screwdrivers, cigarette-lighter style. I wanted to do the same with mine but I was worried that the sound would bother people around me. SO, in that pretty specific circumstance or if you just want a cool Doctor Who themed flashlight, this is a pretty good thing to have. If you want a toy that provides a reasonable approximation of what you see in the show, the other product I linked is what you're looking for. |
