Product Description

Power your desktop with Doctor Who Tardis USB Hub. This extremely unusual Doctor Who Tardis USB Hub allows you to connect multiple USB devices to your computer via your very own TARDIS time machine. Now how many people do you know who can say that? Plug it into the USB port on your computer and the blue light on top lights up. When you connect another device to the TARDIS itself, you'll hear the "dematerialization" noise and watch the light slowly flash off and on. An on/off switch for the sound is included, and the unit can be used as a powered or non-powered USB hub. A must have for the serious Doctor Who fan. Approx. 5 inches tall.

The "new" TARDIS hub is very well done. The color is a beautiful bright blue (compared to the faded-blue of the "old" TARDIS) and the detailing is very well done. The lamp, door lock and handles are all painted in their respective accent colors (lamp and door lock are bronze, door handles are silver - I think they were all blue on the "old" model TARDIS hub). Just a note about the TARDIS pictured. All vendors display the same photo, but the TARDIS that's delivered actually looks much better. The white window trim is wider on the one I received and shows up much better than the windows on the website. Also, the window panes are all uniformly black, i.e., the lower L & R corner panes are not "frosted". The only feature that could use improvement is the signage. The "police box, etc." is printed on a sticker that's been applied to the plastic surface of the unit. I can imagine that, over time, the stickers may become "unstuck" and need to be glued. It would look better if the signage could be incorporated in a more permanent manner.

This was actually the 2nd TARDIS USB Hub I'd ordered, the first having been returned (another vendor) due to serious issues (the light and dematerialization sound stopped working within days, etc.). There was a slight mixup with my order this time. I ordered from ComputerGear and paid S/H (even though I'm an Amazon PRIME member) to be certain of getting a 10th Doctor's version of the TARDIS USB Hub. To my surprise and disappointment, a "new" 11th Doctor's TARDIS USB Hub arrived. I decided not to worry about it when I noticed that there were also several cosmetic problems with the unit (smudged paint on the windows, crooked signage). Still, I thought I'd just live with it.

Because I purchased this to replace the previous version of the TARDIS USB Hub I own, this review will consist of comparisons between the updated '2011 TARDIS version' and the previous '2005 TARDIS version'. There is little in the way of changes to the functionality and usefulness of the item, so I'll cover that first and move on to what is (in my opinion) a more impotant facet: the aesthetics. I'm updating from the previous USB Hub for only one reason: I like the look of the new TARDIS better!

***** 1. Functionality
The plug & play as well as the physical functionality of the TARDIS USB Hub in general is very dependable and can in almost every way compete with all other standard multiple USB ports. There are four USB ports (two on each side). All of them are easily accessible, well placed for what the product is, are neither tight nor loose, and I've never once had a struggle or negative moment while using them. There is no software needed or extraneous items needed to run the unit. After solid week's worth of use and compared to the previous unit, there seems to be zero change to the functionality.

There is a port for an 7.5 DC adapter to power the unit. Note that this adapter was ~not~ included with my product (new or old) and I did not expect that it should be. It's more conveniently powered by my computer, connected by the attached-to-unit USB. This is definitely enough to run my items. And who wants one more unnecessary plug? Not I! :)

Sounds seem a bit more distorted than the last (due probably to being somewhat louder with the same version speaker), and the sound loop ends sooner. The shorter loop is probably a plus for most people as the sound is only activated upon plugging a USB in.

My husband just finished building us a new computer, on the cheap and on the fly. We were short usb ports for several items and since he was getting a new computer on my birthday he told me I got to pick the usb hub. I, being a Who fan, picked a tardis, and he was skeptical.

It did take a long time to arrive, showing up on the very last day of the estimate, but it was packaged well, and worked fine. He was actually impressed. While mine didn't come with the Ac adapter that would allow it run larger equipment (it does have the jack, just no adapter), we haven't needed it. It runs our flash drives, the cameras and even the scanner fine, and the light reminds my husband when he leaves his flash drive in the hub.

The sound effects work well, and sounds good, and the addition of the on/off switch makes it perfect.

All in all, a very good buy, and I would buy one again.

As other reviewers have stated, this is a nice hub but it did not support my daughter's usb keyboard or mouse and it won't charge her iPhone or iPad. So, for her it's her second hub, the first is powered but this one is for her to use when she doesn't need the power and she likes the sound and lights.
Understanding the power issues, I probably would not buy this again.

I thought buying the power adapter would give it enough juice to charge my iPhone5. It does not, i was really hoping to use this as a charging hub for all my electronics. Now it just looks pretty sitting on my desk.... Wish i had a sonic screwdriver to fix it...
