Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Having a sick pet is a stressful situation. There is no way your furry friend can tell you exactly what is ailing him or her. Some problems are fairly easy to remedy and can be handled by an alert, knowledgeable owner at home. Others are indications of more serious conditions requiring the intervention of a veterinarian. Here a panel of respected vets provides hints for everyday pet healthcare. Each section includes descriptions and suggestions for coping with or curing ailments ranging from arthritis to shedding. Almost 100 different symptoms and problems are covered, and several of the chapters have a section entitled "When To See the Vet." Though this book is not a medical reference or a substitute for veterinary care, it is full of useful tips for making your dog's or cat's life more comfortable. Recommended for libraries where interest in pets runs high.?Edell Marie Schaefer, Brookfield P.L., Wis.

4.0 out of 5 stars It could have been better, August 18, 2000
This review is from: The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats: Over 1,000 Solutions to Your Pet's Problems-From Top Vets, Trainers, Breeders and Other Animal Experts (Hardcover)
This book could be an encyclopedia of home remedies for dogs and cats. Over 300 pages cover perhaps all common health problems, which are listed alphabetically thus making it easy to find something, from birthing to asthma, fears, fever, car sickness, cataracts, as well as behavior problems such as chewing, car chasing, jealousy, house-training and much much more.

The only disadvantage in my opinion, is that everything is briefly mentioned, taking only a couple of pages for each subject. The authors could have expanded, making this book the only one a pet owner would ever need.

I do recommend it though to every house with a dog or a cat because it covers almost every illness and trouble you will come across. An experienced owner will find it interesting for the house library, but if you are a beginner you may want to use this book as an addition, "supplement". For beginners I strongly recommend "What your dog is trying to tell you".

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Pet Owners, December 29, 2001

This review is from: The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats: Over 1,000 Solutions to Your Pet's Problems-From Top Vets, Trainers, Breeders and Other Animal Experts (Hardcover)
This book is filled with good advice for pet owners. Almost every type of pet health problem is discussed in this book. Unfortunately, because the book covers both dogs and cats some of the information is brief. This is a good reference book for pet owners. I would recommend this book to people who own both a dog and a cat and need a good overview of pet health. If you have only a dog, or only a cat, you might want to get a health book that is more detailed for your type of animal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should I call the Vet?, January 23, 2001
This review is from: The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats: Over 1,000 Solutions to Your Pet's Problems-From Top Vets, Trainers, Breeders and Other Animal Experts (Hardcover)
Ever consult one of those many little medical books to find out whether or not a condition you may have is simply trivial or cause for alarm? I think we all have at one time or another and this book, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats is similar. Why is my pet being destructive? Is a cyst a serious thing? How do I clip nails on an animal with dark nails? WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE VET?

This comprehensive volume contains over 1,000 tips including multiple suggestions on aging, barking, car chasing, drooling, fighting, hair balls, itching, meowing, noise anxiety, overweight, poisoning, ringworm, spraying, ticks, urinary tract infections, vision problems, worms, etc. It is not only a useful do-it-yourself book, but one that also clearly lays out guidelines as to when one should take a pet to the Vet. A must have reference for the dog and/or cat owner. A great "peace of mind" book to have on hand.
