5.0 out of 5 stars Controlling your own health!
I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!

I think the best way to use this book...

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic information
Most of the information is a rehash of conventional mainstream thinking...which is often incorrect. i.e. dairy is great source of calcium. While technically correct, this source of calcium is not readily absorbed in the body. The author actually encourages a 50% carbohydrate diet for diabetics!

I loved reading this book because it was packed with information on the foods we love. More than 9,000 scientific studies have proven beyond doubt that food is our best medicine. This book shows which foods are the most healing. In nature animals know which foods to nibble on to get well, with this book...we will too!

I think the best way to use this book is to completely read it cover to cover and write down every food you think you need. Then, try to incorporate those foods into your diet. Studies have identified 107 of the most powerful healing foods, spices and herbs. There are some compounds which just cannot be absorbed by the human bloodsteam unless they are eaten in a food. Taking ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) in a pill form doesn't work. It is essential to eat strawberries or other berries in order to obtain ellagic acid. After reading this book you will look at a stawberry pie in a new way.

"Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food." --Hippocrates, 400 B.C.

This book also gives helpful hints on how to select produce and keep it fresh. There is also some great information on how to prepare fruits and vegetables.

You will find great life saving information:

Eating cherries helps to prevent cancer, "perillyl alcohol" blocks the formation of a variety of cancers and contain a compound called quercetin. This neutralizes cancer-causing agents in the body. It also shields your DNA against cancer.

Eating red grapefruits will give you more "lycopene" which helps protect against heart disease. Ruby Red and Star Ruby are great choices.

"Diet has the distinction of being the only major determinant of health that is completely under your control." --Andrew Weil, M.D.

The recipes are easy to make and there are plenty of them. There are also plenty of great pictures to get you to the store! Blueberries anyone...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doctors Book of Food Remedies - A valuable resource !, June 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Doctor's Book of Food Remedies (Paperback)
I would just like to comment on how thrilled I am with "The Doctors Book of Food Remedies" ! My husband and I are big believers in natural healing and preventative medicine and we have found this book an excellent resource. It explains in detail the different benefits of many common foods and it is very easy to understand. I also thought the index is very thorough and it is very easy to look up a specific condition. I also liked the fact that recipes are included at the back of each chapter, which show how easily these foods can be incorporated into your diet. We have purchased other books in the past that have talked about the healing power of foods but none of them have been nearly as comprehensive and easy to use. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their health. It is a great resource !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, November 26, 2004
This review is from: Doctor's Book of Food Remedies (Paperback)
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. I use it constantly as a reference for looking up information on foods and ailments, and sometimes I just read through. I've read a lot of what is included in here in other sources (health magazines, books, internet, etc.)and this book organizes it all very well. I love the alphabetical organization. The information is great, I've used a lot of it successfully, and really appreciate having all this useful information in book form!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Concise and Very Much to the Point!, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Doctor's Book of Food Remedies (Paperback)
A wonderful, thorough read full of EXTREMELY useful information that is easy to understand. Many books of this nature are so full of technical 'stuff' it's hard to find the really useful information you're looking for. If you like 'Prevention' magazine SIMPLICITY, you'll LOVE this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just good food!, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Doctor's Book of Food Remedies (Paperback)
This book sticks to FOOD for healing. Now that herbs have come about to heal or not heal, it's better to not use herbs.. Food should be the prime healing for the body. If the proper food is eaten, we could all live to be 100! The baby boomers need a good nutritional book like this to keep us young. Thank you Prevention!

5.0 out of 5 stars attia, April 11, 2007
This review is from: Doctor's Book of Food Remedies (Paperback)
This book is simply the best. It is categorized by food items. It is not technical. For example, you want to find out if grapes are good for you and why. you go to grapes. A quick summary tells you what grapes are good for in plain english, like reduce chol. lower blood pressue and so on. Then you can read more about that food item. There are kitchen recommendations of how to get the best of that food item.
All in plain english.
I highly recommend it.
