5.0 out of 5 stars It lives up to it's name-America's Best!
I have been counting calories for a long time-over 20 years and this is the best pocket-sized book I've ever owned! It's eye-appealing and is loaded with excellent information. Besides calorie counts, the book also takes care of you if you are on a low-carb diet or watching fat grams! Most pages also have excellent and helpful notes, funny cartoons or witty sayings...

2.0 out of 5 stars Use Only if You're Counting Carbs or Evaluating Fast Food
Over 1/3 of the total book pages are devoted to fast food evaluation, broken down into calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, and carbs. If you're a fast food eater, than this will probably be a good guide for you. However, if you're looking for a calorie counter for basic foods...this is not your guide. The rest of the foods are broken down...

Besides calorie counts, the book also takes care of you if you are on a low-carb diet or watching fat grams! Most pages also have excellent and helpful notes, funny cartoons or witty sayings that help you keep your sense of humor while policing your food intake. I was so pleased to finally have one book that I con carry in my purse that is so comprehensive. I have used this book for less than 2 weeks and have lost 6 lbs! For me it has added a little more "fun" to my diet. This little book has lots of helpful health info, too. I am really enjoying it and am recommending it to my friends! This is the book I always wanted but didn't know existed until now! Thank you so much!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to end dieting forever, June 26, 2000
By A Customer

This is a wonderful guide to good eating habits! By using the information available in this book, and by writing down everything I eat, I have lost a sensible 32 pounds in 9 months without feeling hungry or doing without foods I really enjoy. This helps you plan your meals with foods you like , "budgeting" calories so that you don't exceed your limit each day. I have found in addition to wieght loss, because of the process of budgeting calories, I tend to eat more healthful, low calorie foods, so I'm getting a more balanced diet. This has what's missing in other calorie counters; baking ingredients so you can calculate calories per serving of your own favorite recipes, and a guide to many popular restaurant foods.

A great tool for self improvement!

5.0 out of 5 stars 12 Calories for a Teaspoon of Nutmeg!, December 5, 2002
What a gem "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" is!

This purse-sized book puts honesty into eating.

Essentially, it is a group of lists. You'll see the product name, and in three columns to the right of it, how many calories, fat and carbohydrates. The strength resides in its thoroughness. It seem as if the editors came in my neighborhood grocery store and took notes, cataloguing these stats from every item. There is even a calorie count for spices (a teaspoon of nutmeg has 12 calories!), as well as alcohol (you'll find your favorites brands, plus a general list).

There is a section on restaurants in general. Presuming, for example, red beans and rice is pretty much the same anywhere, we learn we'll be eating about 280 calories.

Disheartening is the restaurant chain section, from Applebee's to Zantiago. I was pleased to see how Boston Market did, but I see the stuffing and gravy on their turkey meal I love costs me an additional 430 calories.

There are some nutritional sections, explaining the fundamentals of a good diet, what fiber is all about and some discussion of sodium.

It is all very handy, and so I fully recommend "The Doctors Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter."

5.0 out of 5 stars Wealth of Nutritional Info!, March 16, 2002
By A Customer
This book is the best of its kind I've seen. It has calorie, fat, and carb counts for every kind of food imaginable. Great that it's updated every year. And it has complete nutritional data listings for items from 101 fast-food/restaurant menus, which is a big help for us folks who eat on-the-run but want to stick with a healthy diet. I have a friend whose son is diabetic, and they use it all the time to keep track of his carbohydrate intake. The book's small size makes it convenient to carry along everywhere. Don't know how I've been getting along without it. My only problem with the book is that people keep "borrowing" it!

5.0 out of 5 stars By Far THE BEST!, November 10, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have not written very many reviews but I have bought quite a few Food Count references and this is BY FAR THE BEST.
Everything I need to find is in the book and easy to locate.
Many of these type of books do not include an index, this one does.
It also has ALL the counts I want, calories, fat and carb.s.
There is also much more information in this small easy to carry diet guide.
Includes great diabetic, fiber, osteoporosis, and protein & iron guides!
Along with an alcohol guide and counter.
I was able to find listings for Starbucks and TGI Fridays pre-mixed drinks that is not listed on the labels or readily provided by the companies.
I would recommend this to anyone and plan on giving them as stocking stuffers to friends and relatives who are trying to eat a more well balanced diet!
(BTW, I always wonder if people who leave such glowing reviews are somehow affiliated with the book somehow, I assure you I'm just someone out there who purchased and love it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Diabetics!, October 24, 2000
By
It is absolutely fantastic!

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in June of 2000. In order to properly guage my insulin intake, I must count my carbs at every meal. I was given a couple of books in the hospital, but I purchased this one and carry it with me everywhere I go. It is absolutely fantastic! It is the most comprehensive source of carbohydrate information that I have found. Not only does it contain specific restaurant information, it contains information on various types of cuisine (i.e. Mexican, Thai, etc.).

I'd highly recommend this book to other diabetics on a carbohydrate counting diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb guide to eating better--not just for dieters!, August 11, 2002

Catherine S. Vodrey (East Liverpool, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A good friend recommended to me Allan Borushek's "The Doctor's Pocket Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" and I ordered a copy the next day. I have found it to be the single soundest, most detailed, most comprehensive, and easiest-to-use nutrition book I've ever seen.

Not only does Borushek give calorie/fat/carb information, he gives detailed information on recommended fat intake, carbs and diabetes, calories-burned-per-minute for dozens of different forms of exercise, food diary and eating habit tips, and more. This book is PACKED with not just information, but USABLE information that can make a real difference in your eating habits and in turn, your energy level.

One of the best things Borushek does here is give detailed, concise calorie/fat/carb counts for foods from over one hundred different chain or nationally known restaurants. It's really difficult to go wrong here. I'm delighted to have educated myself a little more via Borushek's very valuable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Book, May 22, 2001
This review is from: The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter : Plus 80 Fast-Food Chains and Restaurants (2001 Edition) (Paperback)
I own several "Calorie Counter"-type books. This one is by far the best. I use it just about every day. It has a lot of information, and multiple access points to that information (i.e., by Table-of-Contents or by means of a useful index). Additionally, Borushek is a nutrionist and includes meaningful and very useful information on fats, carbs, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more in appendix-like sections of the book. There is also a very up-to-date section on restaurant-specific fast food. I also use the more generic Ethnic Foods section to track down more esoteric-type resaurant foods. A big thumbs up for this one.
