Book Description

April 1, 2011
Detailed biographies of the 11 actors who have played the Time Lord, including the latest, Matt Smith

Doctor Who is the world's longest-running science fiction television series, and the role of the Time Lord has been a career landmark for all 11 actors who have played him. Few roles in television history are as iconic, demanding, or as anticipated by its legion of fans as that of the famous time traveler with two hearts. This compendium of facts about the men behind the role reveals to fans who was a bouncer for the Rolling Stones before taking control of the Tardis, who was nearly blown up in World War II aboard HMS Hood, who had a fondness for wooly hats and a grandson who would become Harry Potter's nemesis, and who played a transvestite barmaid before becoming a Who heart-throb. All these bizarre facts are expained, and many more, as the lives and careers of each Doctor—including the youngest and most recent incarnation, Matt Smith—are put under the spotlight and given the credit they so richly deserve. Including interviews with many of the stars, this is a must-have for any fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative, maybe too much info, October 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Doctors: Who's Who: The Story Behind Every Face of the Iconic Time Lord (Hardcover)
So far, it's got a lot of background info, but possibly too much detail and not enough personal information. I have only made it through the 3rd doctor. It would be nice to get more information about the men's backgrounds, childhood/schooling, love lives, family life, kids, etc. rather than so much info on all the acting they have done. Overall, it seems like a good book though. I wonder if the author wasn't able to find out a lot of personal info on the earlier doctors. Maybe there will be more on the more recent doctors, when I get there.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, August 21, 2011

I found this to be very interesting to read. Short biographies of all the actors to have played the role.

One omission that I'd like to add: Jon Pertwee played in an episode of 'The Young Indiana Jones' as a General in the German Luftwaffe. This is not listed in his filmography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read but there is only one, true definitive Doctor..., August 21, 2011
This review is from: The Doctors: Who's Who: The Story Behind Every Face of the Iconic Time Lord (Hardcover)
Nice biographies on all the men to play the Doctor, However the truth remains..."Tom Baker" will always be the best and definitive Doctor. He was/is the best representative of the character. He was the complete package and had all the key ingredients that made the character memorable and popular with people of all ages. Him and Philip Hinchcliffe are the ones that made "Doctor Who" a Worldwide success. Plus, the modern series is just a special effect-laden, visual soap opera. Whereas, the classic series had substance. Well-written stories and fine characterization just to name two aspects. At least before John Nathan-Turner took over as producer. If you're just getting into "Doctor Who", I recommend checking out the "Tom Baker era 1974 - 1981" first and foremost, then go from there.
