Editorial Reviews

Review

"Roters and Hall describe ways to improve doctor and patient communication, specifically sociodemographic and contextual aspects of how doctors and patients behave, what happens during a medical visit, and valuable results of improving interactions. They examine methods for improvement, prototypes of model interactions, social and personal characteristics that affect behavior, information exchange, patient satisfaction, and the consequences of communication. This updated edition includes new chapters and sections on the influence of a physician's race, ethnicity, and gender. Both author and subject indexes are provided."

SciTech Book News

"For this thoroughly updated and expanded second edition of a 1992 book, Roter and Hall draw on their studies in the field of medical communication, as well as on many other research papers (there is a 28-page bibliography of citations). Their decision to revamp the text comes in the wake of new competency requirements for medical school graduates, including interpersonal communication. The focus is on talk, e.g., nonverbal cues between doctors and patients, including how a physician's characteristics influence his or her communication. One section investigates what the research literature has concluded about medical visits (e.g., that much information is withheld during visits). The authors finish by detailing prospects for improved talk and throughout give conclusions and statements to help modify and improve practice. Although general readers will find the information interesting, this is an excellent textbook that gathers all the work on the subject in one place. Recommended for academic, medical, and special collections with a specific interest in patient empowerment and communication in medical settings."

Library Journal

"[R]oter and Hall's book is readable and informative for those new to the field. But first and foremost, it is a must for researchers. Rather than filling their pages with lengthy tables summarizing findings of individual studies, the authors present their conclusions and highlight them with detailed descriptions of a few comprehensive and well-conducted studies. They provide references for summary reviews….I hope physicians and psychologists, as well as patients, will read and learn from this seminal book."

5.0 out of 5 stars Reviews research on physician-patient communication, June 27, 2011

This review is from: Doctors Talking with Patients/Patients Talking with Doctors: Improving Communication in Medical Visits (Paperback)
This is a book about communication between physicians and patients in the medical interaction. What I love most about this book is that it is completely based on research (much of which was conducted by the authors). It is a fascinating look at what factors are related to the quality of interactions (such as patient and physician's gender and age), as well as the effects of physician-patient interactions on patient health and satisfaction. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in this aspect of healthcare communication.

After I read this book I realise how little patients tell and how much less we need to talk, so we can hear more. Worth a read .Serious thought provoking ideas. Dr Nagi
