Documenting Science explores this work, beginning in 1939 with Abbott's early experiments with scientific imagery, continuing with science-based commercial assignments, and culminating in 1958 with the Physical Science Study Project at MIT which illustrated a new series of physics text books. This spectacular body of work is arguably Abbott's most innovative and creative. Both beautiful and instructive, these images often illustrate some basic scientific principle. They are a marriage of science and art, and have fundamentally changed the way thousands of students visualize complex principles of physics.

Illustrations of physical principles

This is a superb collection of photographs illustrating phenomena in motion under gravity, magnetic fields and of light waves Originally done for an innovative high school physics textbook done in the late 1950's, the photographs are technically excellent and remain as interesting today. Here, however, the explanations of what you are seeing are very brief. They require exposition by a physicist. As much as I enjoyed my copy, I shall donate it to a high school or college physics department where I hope it will have long service as excellent outside source material.

intriguing photos, even today

Intriguing scientific images that would require great ingenuity and patience to reproduce, even today. Berenice, shooting on large format film, with unbelievably slow lenses, and strobes that were equally slow and temperamental, was a genius.
