Editorial Reviews

In 1994, 21-year old Queensbridge rapper Nas changed Hip Hop forever with his classic debut album Illmatic. Though the album prominently featured some of the era s best producers, only one other emcee was invited to appear on a song. That artist was AZ, and with one incredible verse on Life s A Bitch, he instantly became one of the leading artists of New York s Hip Hop golden age in the mid-90s. His 1995 debut disc Doe or Die would solidify his claim to legendary status, and now, 15 years later, AZ returns to deliver an expanded, reimagined version of that classic album for a new generation of fans to discover. In addition to new versions of Rather Unique, Sugar Hill and Gimme Yours, AZ contributes five all-new songs with production from East Coast heavyweights such as Pete Rock, Statik Selektah and L.E.S., among others. Not simply a rehashed effort, Doe or Die 15th Anniversary Special Edition revives all the elements that made the original an undisputed masterpiece, while delivering new music from an artist still in his prime.

1. Intro (15 Years)
2. Rather Unique
3. Feel My Pain
4. Give Me (What U Cant Get Back)

10. Sugar Hill

4 1/2stars because of one track(Nearly Perfect)

Well as a Az fanatic I had a lot of expectations for the CD. There's alot of things people need to understand this is about half the orginal album, and the other half is new material. Also he recorded the older tracks again to match them up with the new beats. That being said the new beats made for older songs were pretty well done. Some are intended to change the whole flow of the orginal track. It was a success in some tracks and not quite on Rather Unique . Ofcourse being Az lyrics he still over powers the not so quite well matched beat. While Give Me Yours-just blossom into a even more impressive song than the orginal. The World Don't Stop- really seems to reach further into the past and really suceeds in being something different than the orginal. Feel 4 U- evolved into a even deeper song thanks to the use of voice overs and sound selection.

The new tracks
Feel My pain-is a very hardcore/old school kind of track. He really cover so much subject matter that it makes it impossible to keep up with it all in one listen.

Nothing Move-Has that hungry hustling swag to the song, and it show's AZ is still a hungry artist.

Calm-100% fire that's my review for that song. FIRE! Best song on the album in my opinion.

Im I'll- He leaked that song a long time before its offical release. Still it is song I feel represents that he knows he should be top 5 material and shows it with a lyrical assault. Very Impressive AZ track. (I think the choice to take this off of doe or die 2 was wise because fans were doubting if it belonged on that album)

The Bonus track is half live Az performance, and the other half is a new song.

Bonus* Make Believe- This song sold the whole album for me. Song is basically about people putting on a front or living behind a fecad. Very well written and deserves mutiple listens. Funny ending

Good for memory lane but the original is so much better. Rather unique is butchered but Gimmie yours is heavenly. It's nice to get AZs respective on these songs after most rappers aren't relevant by that much time.

This album is divided between re-imagined tracks from AZ's 1995 classic like Give Me (what you cant get back) and Rather Unique and sublime new 2010 tracks like the rugged yet smooth The Wake. Throughout, AZ displays an amazing flow and star producers like Baby Paul and Lil Fame give us soul beats which never sound dusty. This is one of the best albums you can get if you love that mid 90s era of NYC hip hop.

the re make of rather unique in no way shape or form does the original justice. everything else on here is great though. That song is the only reason i dont give it 5 stars. AZ still got it. better than all these other wack cats out there. he brings lyrics. word.
