Beautiful illustrations, thoughtful answers to hard question,

This book is beautifully illustrated and gives thoughtful answers to questions kids ask. I especially like the references in the back. I would reccomend it for the illustrations alone and would love to see some of them available for framing. Kids may not be so enamored but the parents and grandparents who saw it bought it! It opens a door to deeper discussion with a younger child. Buy it you will love it! I am a teacher and a grandma.

Fresh, creative, unique approach,

A masterfully written book showing ways to see God in our world. Exquisite artwork. My kids enjoyed the story, laughing at the unique way it talks about God, and immediately asked for a re-reading. We have many Christian children's books in our family library -- this is one of the most refreshing and visually stunning.

This is a beautiful book that shows children all the ways that God helps us and what he wants us to do to help others. My 2 year olds love the pictures and the story.

Does God Know How to Tie Shoes? is a beautifully illustrated conversation between a child named Katrina and her parents. Each double-paged spread contains a question from Katrina and an answer from one of her parents. All the questions are about God: What does God wear? Can God tie shoes? How does God talk? etc. Each answer from her parents is a paraphrased Biblical reference from the book of Psalms. Sometimes Katrina comments on her parents' answers, sometimes she doesn't.
For instance, in the first double-paged spread, the dialogue goes like this: Mama, what does God wear? I don't know, Katrina. But He dresses the hills with joy and the meadows with sheep. And the flowers never have to worry about what to put on. I think God wears orange beads when the sun comes up and a big grey hat when it rains. This type of dialogue continues throughout the book. The last two pages of the book contain the Biblical references for the parents' answers to Katrina's questions. What I Like: I like the simple text, the child-like questions, and the life-life illustrations throughout the book. What I Dislike: As shown in the above reference to the text, the speakers are not identified. By reading the above text, we can determine that Katrina asked the question and her mama answered it. It might be confusing to children that no reference is given to the speaker of the last sentence ("I think God wears orange beads. . . "), even though adults would recognize the speech patterns and word choices as coming from a child. Also, I think it would have been a bit better if the Biblical references for the answers were printed at the bottom of the pages they referenced, rather than just lumped together at the end of the book. Overall Rating: However, the overall rating is still very good. I would give it 4 1/2 stars, but I can't, so I'll settle for a full 4 stars. Christine M. Irvin - Christian Children's Book Review

This review is from: Does God Know How to Tie Shoes? (Board book)
"Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?" is a beautiful board book for young children with poetic text based on Psalms and other Biblical sources and bright impressionistic illustrations of the subject, a walk though the countryside taken by Katrina and her parents that leads to her questions about God. Suitable for 1-4 year old children, "Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?" is a lovely, inspirational picture book that will gently lead young children through their first explorations of faith.

Excellent Childlike Answers to Children's Questions,

This review is from: Does God Know How to Tie Shoes? (Hardcover)
As a national speaker and writer to parents, The Birth to Five Book: Confident Childrearing Right from the Start, I applaud -- and highly recommend -- this book! Written as a dialogue between parent and child, we hear the innocence of a child and the wisdom of the parent. For each naive question the child asks, the parent gently shares an applicable scripture in today's language.
The pictures are beautiful and engaging. This is a lovely book for any child's library. When I speak on nurturing a child's spiritual development I always recommend "Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?" to my audience. Not only can it help parents relate to their child, but it can help us adults relate to our loving Heavenly Father. Books that are easy to read were often difficult to write and it's a gift to communicate truth in simple ways. You may think this book is too simple, but there is depth in each page. I know from experience, the research and labor that goes into writing, and have tremendous appreciation for the profound simplicity of "Does God Know How to Tie Shoes?" |
