5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album, June 27, 2000

I had never heard the Slip before this album. I had heard them mentioned in iprovisational music circles, but had not taken the time to check them out. After listening to "Does" I am definately going to seek out some live shows! These boys are serious musicians. The guitar player is fantastic, his playing style is a cross between Steve Kimock & John Scofield. The bass player is mezmorizing, his playing is both funky and modal, and his solos are very very smooth. The percussionist is top notch as well. He moves and weaves the beat in and out of the guitar & bass beautifully. The music is quite telapathic and without the vocal tracks it would be hard to not classify this as a jazz record. The Slip grooves hard on this cd. I highly recomend it to fans of improvisational music. It is a solid release with great song writing and playing thoughout. Can't wait to hear what they can do live!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Studio Effort From Tremendous Live Band, June 28, 2001
By

I would hope that most are paying no mind to those messages which acclaim DMB as the pinnacle of jamming. The Slip's album offers much more than any of DMB's recent releases. The jams are imaginative and creative, and not atypical of the style, grow on you with each listen. The vocals are, admitedly, hard to listen to at times. The album should not be judged on the vocals alone, however, as it is a showcase of true musicianship. I have seen The Slip live, and can truly say that they are one of the best live acts I have witnessed. I hesitate to give this album 5 stars, not only because it falls somewhat short of their live performances, but also because it impresses a little less than their debut album, From the Gecko. If you can get your hands on that, I would definitely recommend it. It is one of my favorite albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Slip Does More!, June 20, 2000

At long last we have this fresh disc from our brothers Brad, Andrew and Marc."Does," the Slip's first widely distributed studio offering, captures the essence of the evolution which this amazing human trio has been undergoing during the many moons since their first release, "From the Gecko," in 1997. Playful, elegant, jazzy, funky, earthy infectious, heartful, thoughtful, this disc reflects the honesty of spirit which these young men embody. "Does" includes an organic blend of both purely instrumental and vocally enhanced tracks with variety fit for all ears. From the irresistibly funky "So Dope" to the beautiful melodic strains of "Crack in the Sundial," this new disc, "Does" is on the top of my listening list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, December 27, 2003
This review is from: Does (Audio CD)
The opening track, Catacea, is the most amazing composition I've ever heard. I have this album on a tape, and whenever the song comes on, I swear to god, I start crying. It's so beautiful. I can't breathe. It just totally encompasses my entire body and mind. For this reason, it has become my favorite song of all time, and is the reason this album deserves 5 stars.

As for the rest of the album, it's tremendously soothing, the guitar work is wicked awesome; they just need a different singer, or no singing at all. The instrumental tracks are far superior to the vocal ones. Great driving-at-night music.

4.0 out of 5 stars It most certainly 'Does'!, December 13, 2000

'Does', the sophmore effort from this trio of amazingly talented musicians displays their increasing range, ability and maturity. Brothers Andrew and Brad Barr alongside bassist Marc Friedman lay down an incredibly dense sound for a trio. Despite their young age and 'jamband' classification, this trio shows the groundwork by which a new hybrid of jazz is developing. The Slip is creating a new sound, based on their own uniqe experiences and interests -- both musical and personal. 'Does' offers us an opportunity to share in their views and rejoice in their music.

DVDAuctioner should stick to frat parties and keep his feeble and uneducated opinions to himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice for the yoga people, June 23, 2000

This Does by The Slip is good for the mind and body. I find it very relaxing and peaceful. The music can lift you to another demension and time. The beats, and variety of instruments, make the songs demesional. I particulary like how the instruments are not well known or heard often. They sound like foreign instruments. It can put pictures in your head of foreign countries and the wilderness. The arrangement and set up of the songs makes this cd and or tape full of enjoyments and ease.I suggest this albumb to anyone who enjoys being close to the true sounds of instruments, music, and being in touch with oneself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warning! Not for DMB fans, November 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Does (Audio CD)
For those of you who think that Dave Matthews is as good as it gets (previous reviewer), do not buy this album. For those of us who can appreciate "real" talent when we hear it, go nuts on this one. Comparing DMB to The Slip is like comparing the Beatles to Herbie Hancock (i.e. comparing apples and oranges). The Slip is not about the cheery songs that make High School girls go nuts. The one word that describes them best is "groove." Very much along the same lines as Medeski Martin and Wood. Wheather they are banging on paint cans or deep into a guitar driven jam, the groove is always there. In groove bands, the guitar isn't always a melodic instrument, it sometimes takes on a harmonic role, a rhythmic role, or even a percussive role. No doubt in my mind, the slip has got it together. Listen closely to one instrument at a time, and think about what he is doing, and you will be amazed. Wheather it be the irregular drum beat, to the funky bass line, to the masterful guitar work of Brad Barr. Buy this album if you like to be engrossed in good, original, music. If you still want to go to the packed arenas to see DMB, go ahead, I have no problem with that. Those of you, like me, who enjoy grooving, go to a Slip concert in a small venue were you can get right up there with three talented musicians. Just becuase they are labled a "jamband" does not mean that they are supposed to sound like The Dead or DMB.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album, god-like live, September 24, 2000

This band is so amazing, i am truly happy that i discovered them. They are, as all the other reviews say, masters of their instruments. If you are at all interested in the wide range of places a guitar, bass and percussion set can take you, buy this album. And, if the band ever comes to your town, SEE THEM. I saw them live after having their album for a little over a week and they were so amazing; they were beautiful. These are men who know their instruments intimately. i can't say enough about their live show. but, i could only give this 4 stars becuase of the 4 songs on the album (out of 14) that contain lyrics. the lyrics are trite, silly and just dumb. The instrumentation on the songs is also at a lower level. But keep in mind, it's only on four songs! This album is definatly worth the horrid prices people are paying for cds these days. if nothing else, buy it for the Ghanian traditional piece they play on Paint Cans. definatly cool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing for the rap lovers, June 23, 2000

Marshall Mathers LP is a great cd for those who are all into rap, and just enjoy a good listening. The songs are funny in some cases, but serious as well. "The Real Slim Shady" is very true about what he says and stands up for. The beats in this cd are catchy and awesome for every song. The storys, like in the song "Stan", are very interesting too. I enjoyed hearing this cd a lot. "Marshall Mathers LP" is a must-have to just sit back and enjoy.
