NOW my Mama Knows...,
This review is from: Does Your Mama Know?: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Coming Out Stories (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for lesbians that are out, coming out, and people who wonder why the hell we are lesbians in the first place. It's so refreshing to read good literature about homosexuality that is presented from individual points of views and not someone's journal of statistics. Another great aspect is the authors' viewpoints from the true emotional, spiritual, and social soul of themselves, not just the sexual. Often gay and lesbian literature is so immersed in play-by-play sex that it can be paralleled to porn. This book and the support of my partner made it possible for me to cross that road with my mother, and though we are not where I would like to be as far as our mother/daughter relationship, we have come much further than I would have ever imagined possible. Kudos Lisa! I loved and so did all my friends.

"Does Your Mama Know?" was worth the time and effort that I spent visiting four different bookstores and walking a total of four miles or so. "Does Your Mama Know?" is like "The Color Purple," "The Women of Brewster Place" and "Zami" but better. Similar to these books, Moore's book validated my experiences as a lesbian of color. Her well-chosen stories highlight almost every conceivable coming out experience. Although the book is VERY hard to find -- there are only 8,000 copies floating around the world -- I would recommend this to any black lesbian, regardless of nationality.

I Am Now Happy With Me.... The Beautiful Black Lesbian I Am.,

This review is from: Does Your Mama Know?: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Coming Out Stories (Paperback)
Lisa C. Moore.... thank you, thank you, thank you. After reading this book, I am now convinced that there NOTHING wrong with me!!!Too many beautiful black lesbians go through the experience that I went through and it causes them to believe that they are not normal or a woman to love another woman. Well... this book ripped my eyes open to the fact that just because I feel alone, doesnt mean that I am alone. Every black lesbian can see a little of themselves in this book. I will never back down when someone says that being a lesbian is unnatural, because i realize that its as natural as breathing to me! I recommend this book to anyone who feels alone like I did because it will make you realize the need for smart, sophisticated, black, beautiful lesbians and just because your different doesnt mean your not NORMAL!!!!!! Thank you Lisa C. Moore for publishing such a wonderful book.

As Managing Editor of Gay Black Female Magazine, I have read a lot of material by Lesbian writers. The material is this book represents some of the best the Black SGL literary world has to offer. Lisa C. Moore put her foot and whole body in this work. Salutations Sistah! Keep up the great work. I love the story by Gale "Sky" Edeawo! This is a book circle, coffee table, curl up in front of the fireplace and read, read, read kind of book. I really dig it! Ta'Shia Asanti

A black lesbian bookshelf basic,
This review is from: Does Your Mama Know?: An Anthology of Black Lesbian Coming Out Stories (Paperback)
This book unites the coming out experiences of black women from different socioeconomic and geographic backgrounds.
This collection of 49 short stories/poems/essays and interviews offers an insight into the complexities and issues surrounding women of colour as they search for and claim their identities. The selections which are fictional and non-fictional, are personal, daring, honest, funny, moving and thought provoking. In short, this is a powerful book which easily transcends the Women's Studies/African American Studies and the Gay and Lesbian arenas, making it the quintessential "must read" for all.

Does your Momma Know will have you laughing and crying at the same time. The women who have shared their life stories in this book are courageous and a vital part of the Lesbian community. I recommend this book to anyone who is still "in the closet" or who is 'out". This book will make you proud to say I TOO AM A LESBIAN without shame or regret.
