Does it play mkv files with and without subtitles? I really want to find out if this will play mkv files with or without subtitles. As some of you might know most anime episodes on the internet are mkv files and some contain subtitles.

That is the main reason I keep going back to this device for streaming, my tv and game systems usually don't play all files (or audio is not supported), this one does. Subtitles just need to have that separate file (usually .srt) in the same folder as the movie file and you can turn them on/off.

It will play embedded subtitles as well, but I haven't explicitly tested .mkv. When I convert I use .mp4.

Yes, as long as you have a .srt works on all formats.

.mp4 can have subtitles embedded, and I think the WD plays them.
