This review is from: It Doesn't End Here (Audio CD)
I'm not surprised alto saxophonist Marc McDonald's record is the #1 most-added record on the jazz charts this week, since so many of us who have seen him perform with artists as varied as Jamie Begian's big band, cabaret singer Quinn Lemley, or rock acts like Ween and Henry Rollins have been waiting a long time for a solo effort from this this much-heralded journeyman.
And its a journey, man -- with fellows Jim Ridl on piano, Gene Lewin on drums, Steve Cardenas on guitar and Karl Spicer on bass, McDonald's soloing and arrangements on It Doesn't End Here show why this New York-based musician remains one the most sought-after horn players in a city riddled with them. McDonald is also a gifted composer and arranger who has contributed to the Louis Armstrong Jazz Composers Workshop at Lincoln Center and the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop and happily, he wrote several of the tunes on "It Doesn't End Here," including the playful "Till The Cows Come Home," the New Orleans-influenced "Three Sheets To The Wind," the exquisite "Fade To Gold" and the title track, my personal favorite. This is a beautiful, melodic, well-recorded, easygoing and inspired contemporary jazz record. I hope the title of "It Doesn't End Here" is a sign of things to come -- that this is just the beginning.
