Over the year I have become a huge fan of Tamsin Pickeral owning every book she has written. But I have to say "The Dog" has become my favorite. It is an incredible book. For anyone who loves dogs this book is a must have. The art work in the book is amazing to look at and the text is masterfull. I can't say enough about how much I love this book. I also have "The Horse: 30,000 Years of the Horse in Art" and with the two of them together is a work of art in itself. Last year I gave everyone "The Horse" for Christmas and this year they will all be getting "The Dog". They are the perfect compliment to each other.

My cousin introduced me to Tamsin Pickeral's work, I have now become a huge fan! The dog is favorite!!! This book contains wonderful art work and the text is equally as impressive! I have it sitting on my coffee table, where it looks like a piece of art, and have received several comments from impressed guests! I am awaiting some of her other works to arrive and can't wait to read them. For anyone who loves art and loves dogs this book is a must have!

It is an exceptionally beautiful dog book. It has some of the most beautiful paintings that date the dog back to the beginning of time. therefore it is a very interesting historical reading. It is one of the prettiest books of this kind that I have ever seen, for dog lovers a must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Art? Like Dogs? This is the book for you., December 24, 2010

This may be considered a coffee table book, but I found the stories that accompany the many lush examples of dogs in art to be quite informative. I'm quite certain that anyone who appreciates the two subject matters separately will really enjoy this combining compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BOOK Every Dog/Art Lover MUST Have, April 27, 2010

This review is from: The Dog: 5000 Years of the Dog in Art (Hardcover)
By far the most readable and authoritative book on the subject -- informed and informative, splendidly written, beautifully designed, impeccably researched and immaculately presented and illustrated with marvelous reproductions. Ms Pickeral has combined the two greatest passions of my life, Dogs and Art, in a credible, straightforward, scholarly manner devoid of the pomposity and banality common to "coffee table" books.

THE DOG: 5000 Years of the Dog in Art is THE BOOK every Dog/Art lover MUST have. For design, insight, historical literacy, one "coffee table" book TO BE READ -- cover to cover. A most thorough and exhaustive study. All substance. NO FLUFF!

S. K. Sawyer "OperaGeek":
You can't tell a book by its cover. You could have made the effort and opened it before mouthing off. Minnesotans know little of art beyond paintings of ducks and ice fishing houses. I know, I lived there, a most forgetable experience.

Gorgeous book collecting truly spectacular works of art (no dogs playing poker here). It was worth the price just for the picture of an exquisite marble statue from Second Century Rome capturing a tender moment between two dogs (and the sculptor's deep affection for these dogs that resonates over the millennia with us). The statue is at the British Museum, and sadly, I could find no reproductions of it anywhere, so I'll have to just rely on the book. The whole book vividly illustrates the ancient bond between humans and dogs, as captured in breathtaking art.
