These two entries in DK's "Dog Breed Handbooks" series clearly demonstrate the photographic and layout quality for which this publisher is known. The books are compact and concise, with identical formats?only the illustrations are different. Most of the basic dog care information is generic rather than breed specific. Chapters cover choosing a dog, puppy care, care of adult dogs, feeding, grooming, health, breeding, showing, and working. A copy of the American Kennel Club breed standard is offered. A thorough index is included, but a bibliography would have been a useful addition. Fogle (The Encyclopedia of the Dog, LJ 9/15/95) is a British veterinarian well known for his knowledge of animal behavior. Flipping through the pages a parade of beautiful pictures met my eyes. Well written, clear, and informative I would reccomend this book to all new German Shepherd dog owners

Too many Alsatians but good for the beginner,

This book is good for the beginner in GSD or to the casual reader and covers dog care comprehensively, but I think it is a generic book with GSD pictures thrown in. Also, if you are an experienced GSD person in Britain you will be annoyed at how many of the dogs pictured, including those in the Breed Standard section, are anything but to the Standard, and are mostly of Alsatian type, not the SV type, favoured internationally. If you need every book on GSD then buy it, but if you are experienced don't bother.
