Editorial Reviews

"Quite simply a great read--and the debut of a major talent." -- Robert Reginald, long-time author, publisher and editor, currently with Wildside Press LLC.

From the Author

This story is loosely based on my own experiences and challenges during 4 years of veterinary school.  I wrote it with an eye to keeping it real, and yet humorous at the same time (not too difficult to do, as any medical program tends to include a lot of unintentionally funny mishaps, and a lot of bright and quirky people in attendance!)  The book has been well received, and many people have told me that they laughed out loud numerous times while reading it-- a good sign, I think.  Enjoy!  ~MB

More About the Author

I'm a veterinarian living in the Portland, Oregon area; my practice focuses on small exotic pets such as ferrets, rabbits, rodents, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, skunks, reptiles, etc. My family includes 2 daughters, Anna & Sarah, and my lovely wife, Denise, plus Molly the cat. I'm an author of numerous scientific articles and medical textbook chapters, covering exotic pet medicine & surgery. However, fiction writing is my real joy. My first published novel was "Dog Daze & Cat Naps-- A Vet Student's Odyssey." This is a humorous story about the trials and tribulations of a young student as he makes his way through 4 years of veterinary school (based loosely on my own experiences). I'm also a science fiction author. My fun short story "Outside Looking In" is featured in the recent sci-fi anthology collection "Yondering". My publisher is Wildside Press (, and my works are also available online via Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.
July 2012: My new novel "The Battle for Eden" is finally out! It's part of a double back-to-back paperback, paired with Charles Gramlich's novel "Under the Ember Star". This story is the 3rd in a series of books about the war between humans and Knackers (a crab-like carnivorous alien species). The novel is written as a stand-alone story, so reading the prior 2 books in the series is not necessary; you can understand and enjoy "Eden" on its own! I've also uploaded cover pictures of my 2 novels, and the anthology "Yondering" which contains my short story "Outside Looking In." Wildside Books is the publisher of all 3 works; both paperback and Kindle versions are available! I'm currently working on another book in the Knacker series, which I hope to have finished later this year, entitled "Dark Angels."

First of all, I think Mark will read this and I am giving you five stars to make up for the guy who loved the book and gave you one star. That just ain't right. Now, I would have given the book three stars probably. Why? It is an interesting story and it is in an area I like and have an interest in. Now with that as a preface, The book tended to drag along in many places because you seemed to fill it with flowery, outdated language about stuff you probably shouldn't have mentioned in the first place. Don't want to gripe without being specific, so: p.389 toward the bottom - "I shook my head and chuckled as she sashayed off stage..." And then we toddled off to the club and had a few chuckers of polo... I shook my head and chuckled, what's the matter with I laughed. And I think it has been 75-100 years since women sashayed. I'm sorry but in some places you write like a 13 year old Mormon missionary schoolboy. I found this kind of writing in far too many places. Now, even with that criticism, I did read and enjoy the book. My favorite books for many years have been the Heriot books about his vet practice. Read them if you haven't before. I have read all of them multiple times and the TV shows are the best thing that has ever been on television. Now, if you wrote - let me ammend that to - when you write another book about your practice will I buy and read it...yes. I also look forward to reading some of your sci fi. Best of luck both medically and literarly.

At first , I didn't think I would like this book, since it was all about the Veterinarian school, not a practicing vet. But I read a few pages, just to be sure I wouldn't be throwing out a good book, and I was hooked after the first few pages! Very well written, interesting, fun, sad, and increases your respect of any Doctor, for all the schooling they go through. I would especially recommend this book to ANYONE who desires to become a veterinarian. You feel of the hectic pace of the school and how it must be to live the life of a doctorate student, living away from family and friends, commuting to different cities and states, all in order to complete your schooling. What dedication this takes.
I really enjoyed the banter of his beautiful relationship he has with his wife. They are lucky to have such a relationship!

Despite being a fictional version of the author's years studying to be a DVM, it's quite clear where the stories take place. Very little is done to disguise the schools and some of the cities, so I found it a bit annoying to read fictional place names when I knew where it really was. Other than this, I found the book to be enjoyable and probably a fairly accurate description of veterinary school. The descriptions of the various teachers and fellow students were great.
