Book Description

March 1, 2000
An endearing, affectionate portrayal of “man's best friend,” these pages offer dog lovers a captivating collection of canine-inspired artwork created through the centuries. Looking across art history at exceptional paintings, drawings, and sculptures from around the world, the book shows our four-legged friends and faithful companions at work, at play, and at rest. The great variety of breeds depicted ranges from the pedigreed prince to the homely mutt, yellow-fanged wolf to pampered lap-dog, mega-sized Saint Bernard to micro-Chihuahua, heroic hound to whimpering cur. Excerpts of relevant prose and poetry are included, chronicling the infinite facets of doghood. One example: “The more I see of men, the more I admire dogs,” declared Madame de Sévigné. Those who agree that the seventeenth-century writer and wit had a good point will surely enjoy this loving tribute to a dog’s life in art and literature.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

YA-In more than 300 different works of art including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, this book shows every imaginable kind of dog playing, resting, and being companions to and working for humans. The excellent reproductions show art that ranges from ancient cultures to modern times throughout the world. The illustrations are captioned with relevant works from poetry and literature and thoughtful quotations. The text that introduces each chapter discusses the different canines: sporting dogs, working dogs, wild dogs, symbolic dogs, etc. Charming is the best word to describe this book.

This review is from: Dog: A Dog's Life in Art and Literature (Hardcover)
Another in the series of memorable art books fromWatson-Guptill, "DOG" follows the format of"CAT", "ZOO", and in cogent writing, excerpts ofpoetry and literature, all to tie together an exploration of how we have viewed dogs through the eyes of artists over the past several hundred years. Etruscan sculpture from 500 BC is placed beside photographs by Muybridge, medieval tapestries, paintings ranging from Bruegel, Bosch, Durer, to David Hockney, Miguel Conde, and other fresh contemporary young painters. Author Iain Zaczek has a scholarly but endearing writing style that allows this litle book to sing. For the legions of dog owners this is a sensitive celebration. As a means to introduce children (of all ages!) to fine art, this is a valuable tome. END
