The best, clearest, most useful first aid book out there.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dog First Aid: A Field Guide: Emergency Care for the Hunting, Working, and Outdoor Dog (Paperback)
I've reviewed many first aid books in my search. This is the clearest, most practical canine first aid book I've found. Most books read "take dog to nearest vet", this isn't always possible and this book covers what to do in those situations using clear text and precise pictures. Essential for anyone who takes their dog anywhere (even those dogs who just go to the park and back), but essential for dogs who go hiking, camping, travelling, kayaking, etc with their humans; anywhere you wouldn't be able to reach a vet within 20 minutes. Keep one in your car's glove box, the dog's backpack (along with a portable first aid kit), and one at home.

Being a nurse, I take the proverbial "be prepared" to extremes, but when you are camping hundreds of miles away from the nearest emergency health care facility, you must be educated to handle most emergencies of your family members.Well, DON"T FORGET THE DOG We just adopted a wonderful black labrador, and being a busy outdoor kind of family I needed a concise, handy, well rounded emergency care manual for my little boy, Abbott. I researched and decided on this pocket field guide that is perfect for carrying on your outdoor excursions. I am pleased with the content and find the directions easy to follow, even for a lay person uneducated in medicine. Hopefully, my dog will never need emergent care, but I feel better knowing and gathering the knowledge needed to be there for him if the need becomes reality. Buy this book and put together a first aid kit for your dog. His life could depend on it.

Excellent reference for the canine first aid kit. Simplified and practical treatment for your dog out in the field without access to a vet. Can save the life of your dog in an emergency. Small book fits into kit or large jacket pocket, contains specific first aid lists for different outdoor activities with your best friend.

Excellent veterinary or animal science text for the first aid care of active pets or sporting dogs. Wide variety of conditions and traumatic injuries discussed with practical treatments and care for each specific situation. Excellent text in a handy, small size for storage in first aid kit or glove compartment. A "must have" for dog owners. High school education reading level.

Amazon Editorial reviews states this book is spiral bound and is one of the major reasons I purchased it for the "flipping ease". It is NOT spiral bound or at least the one that was shipped to me wasn't. The advise is great contained within the book - but would be a fabulous product if it actually were spiral bound.
Actual editorial comment part: Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Review This is the first pocket field guide that will cover the injuries and problems that your dog can encounter in the field, presenting the symptoms and treatment. This first aid guide is 4 x 6, pocket -sized and spiral bound for easy use.

This is a nice little book that will tell you if you need to take your dog to a vet, or if the first aid can be done by the owner. It is set up nicely in that there are "tabs' on the outside of the pages so you can quickly go to the section needed. You do need to know what the issue is though - I wouldn't recommend this book if you are a first time owner - there are other books that will give you a list of symptoms, then tell you what it might be (and they are a little more thorough - this would be a nice addition to a book like that.

Luckily, we have yet to truly need this book. We bought it for our cross country trip with our dog. The book had many good reviews. It is set up in a very user friendly way to allow quick reference.

I bought this book for when I take my dog backpacking or hiking in remote locations and a vet is a day or more away. My dog hasn't had any injuries yet, but I am glad the information is there in case something happens. The info seems good and I am so far happy with the purchase.

If you have a dog and hunt in far-away places, then this book is a great addition to your dog first-aid kit. It is basically the best canine field medicine book I could find. Have not had to do anything serious to my dog yet, but this book at a minimum will help you understand what to do to stabilize your dog should you need to so that you can buy some time to get to a vet center. Highly recommend.
