"No American could be unmoved by the stories and images of these dogs and their handlers...Their journeys, as told in these pages, reinforce our resolve to persevere, rebuild and keep our nation safe and strong." - Rudolph Giuliani, from the Foreword to the Tenth-Anniversary Edition.

"If you deem yourself a dog lover, get ready to love them even more. A book full of courage, dedication, hope and faith - not just in mankind, but in mankind's best friend." - Denis Leary, actor; writer; comedian; co-owner of Daphne, Holly, Lulu and Gomer; and founder of the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

"This book will touch the soul; highly recomended..." - Library Journal

"In the ten years since 9/11, we have seen dogs and people sacrifice so much in the name of our freedom and safety. Reflecting on the heroism of America's search and rescue dogs and handlers then and now, Dog Heroes of September 11th is an extraordinary commemorative volume of a time America will nefver forget." - Dennis B. Sprung, president and CEO, American Kennel CLub

As my K9 partner is featured in this book, I may be a little bias in my review. I was skeptical at first about a second edition of the original book Ms. Bauer put together. I just didn't see that there was much more of interest about the dogs that worked so hard following this fateful day. I must say I was shocked at the work the 10th Anniversary edition author put forth. Not only did she tie all the loss strings about what happened to these great partners but also provided great insight into how they lived and how they trained. A must for dog lovers!!

I just received this book as a birthday gift from my daughter. We both love dogs and we both love our country so this is a perfect book for us. First let me say I have not read it cover to cover yet, but did scan through and read some sections and get a good feel for this book. It is filled with beautiful, poignant pictures and heart-stirring stories of these canine heroes and their dedicated handlers. You will weep yet again over the devastation and heartbreak of that day and the days that followed, as recounted and chronicled by the handlers. But you will be inspired over and over by the heart, courage and dedication these dogs displayed as they worked tirelessly to find anyone living, and eventually to find any remains in order to provide that small measure of comfort to the families. Their task was daunting and many suffered extreme exhaustion, injuries etc, but they could not be deterred from their task.
The 10th anniversary edition has been updated to include current information on the dogs. Only a few are still alive today and you will weep as the owners share their memories and last days with those dogs who have passed away since 9-11-2001.
Overall, a beautiful book and a heart-stirring tribute to search and rescue dogs everywhere and those who train them and work with them in service to our nation. Truly they are man's BEST FRIEND!

This book (Dog Heros of September 11th: A tribute to America's Search and Rescue Dogs) is very well written and helps show how everyone, including our K-9 friends, helped in the aftermath of the tragic events of that fateful day.

While this book is a well deserved tribute to human and canine heroes, it also provides much detail that can only come from those at the scenes. Detail that is hard to comprehend, yet, is necessary to know, so that we never forget. This book will remain in my house, in a place of honor, for the rest of my life.

THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU PROUD AND MAKE YOU CRY. SOME 3,000 SEARCH AND RESCUE HANDLER/DOG TEAMS WORKED ALL OF THE SITES CREATED ON THAT TRAGIC DAY ON 9/11/01. NOT ALL OF THEM COULD BE REPRESENTED IN THIS BOOK. IT IS BEAUTIFULLY DONE AND I AM GLAD THAT FINALLY SOMEONE HAS GIVEN CREDIT TO THE DOGS, SOME OF WHOM CONTRACTED CANCER FROM THE ASBESTOS DUE TO THEIR SEARCHES ON THE 9/11 SITES. THESE DOGS ARE HEROES TOO.

This is a wonderful book. It brings smiles and tears. What a well-deserved tribute to some often overlooked heroes. The photographs were beautifully done as well. The book sits proudly atop our coffee table for us to peruse and share with our friends.
