The Dog Island is a very cute game aimed for the kiddies, just the simple basics you would expect to learn as "my first videogame rpg" or the like. The quest itself is very simple, not too difficult, and the overall world you get to explore is varied and not very large. There are lots of breeds to choose from as your "hero" and you can choose to be male or female, and also to have a brother or sister. You must go find a cure for you sick sis/bro in a far away island and become a "master sniffer". There is a save feature so you can continue your quest later and a level up feature as your pup gets more experience. No violence, or other unwanted material you would like little kids to avoid. I only found 3 things that I would change in a game of this (cutesy) type. You meet and befriend a little character or "creature" that looks like a piece of cut-out black paper(like a shadow), that looks a little out of place to me in this colorful 3D world. Also, there is a very sad scene were a dog you meet tells you about his past when a female friend got very ill and he could't help her (he is a doctor)so she pased away. He then visits her grave the same day once a year. And finally, when you fight enemies and defeat them (by barking or howling behind them - no biting, cute!), they get knocked out; but not dead, complete with a "dizzy" or "stunned" symbol above their heads. The thing is, if you happen to loose all of your life energy or hearts, you don't seem to get knocked out, in the scene you rather look dead and there is no dizzy symbol above your pup's head. I would add the same "dizzy" symbol so the kiddies wouldn't get upset, or perhaps just explain to the kid playing this game that the pup just got knocked out or stunned instead of killed.
That is my opinion, and must not be a big deal or turn off for getting this game. It is vey cute, all the dogs look like puppies, including the ones supposed to be the adults. The environments you explore are towns, a ship, plains, forests, lakes(you can swim), mountains, deserts, snow fields, caves, and many more. There is a day/night cycle, mini games such as competitions like races, soccer, sledge pulling and hide and seek; fishing, bug-catching and the main dog activity in this game: sniffing. You must use your head and nose to sniff everywere and find the items you need in order to advance in this game and become the ultimate "master sniffer". Most quests requiere you to go and search for a specific item using your nose and the "smell-o-metter" at the bottom of the screen and deliver it to anoter dog, some items are more difficult to find than others. Others include defeating a challenging dog to a competition.
So, in conclusion, this game is aimed towards little kids, but old enough to use a controller, because at the final stages the difficculty rises a bit. It is also possible to be enjoyed by everyone, especially if you like dogs, just don't espect an ellaborate quest or a big challenge, look elsewere if you do. I picked this game because I love dogs and the 9.99 price tag was just too low to pass up.

Today I completed this game. It was really fun. I don't know how I can put it into words how I felt towards my dog,all I can say is that when I finished, I found out how much I loved my pet, even though she was just a digital little critter. So I was crying, partly tears of joy because I knew I had made it, and tears of sadness because I knew I'd never play with my little puppy at Puppsvile or any other of my favorite places, other than the place that I saved last.

I found this game while browsing another game review on YouTube, which was Petz Dogz 2, the reviewer in question made a point of calling it a Dog Island copy-and-paste job, but more to the point, a link to his Dog Island review was right there in the Related Videos menu off to the right and I clicked it, now completely curious about just what Dog Island was. Needless to say the review made me want to buy the game and try it for myself, and that ended up being a great investment.

This game is excellent for all ages and very easy for younger kids. One problem you might have with younger children is that the game doesn't have voice overs so reading is mandatory, and this unfortunately is not like LittleBigPlanet where the story is about as relevant as a PS3 vs 360 argument on Nintendo's forums, this game is very story driven and one of the key ways to progress is to be able to follow instructions and gather information. This is an adventure RPG and does involve quite a bit of content for your buck. For skilled players it might take a few days to complete all the way through without including all of the game's various collectible items but for less skilled, and possibly younger players it could take up to a couple of weeks, depending. In my experience this game does have excellent replayability just because the story is one of the more compelling in today's gaming for younger audiences.

The story of the game is that you're a dog (And you can choose your species from over forty breeds and several colors) who needs to find a cure for your brother who is very sick (The game never directly references death, but there are moments in the story that are very sad, that reference it as a plot device such as when the doctor of the island tells you his back story of his late lover he couldn't save) and to do this you embark on an adventure to a distant island where the game takes place. The objective is to become a master of sniffing so that you can track down a powerful flower only the best sniffers in the world can find (interesting plot device there, but one understandable and easy to remember) and bring it back to save your brother's life. The story mostly revolves around gratitude, that if you do something nice for someone, they will help you in return. This is especially noticed when you nurse a sick bird back to health on the ship taking you to he island and it saves you from drowning later when you're caught swimming in a storm. I know I am probably making this game sound frightening by some standard, but it really isn't that bad for kids, in fact, you might find worse on Zelda which is one of the more popular RPGs.

The gameplay is as solid as can be, I've never experienced any problems with it and it's very well-made. The graphics are perfect for the game. All of the animals sport large, chibi-like heads with tiny little bodies as shown on the box and are extremely cute. The fur on the animals also looks realistic and almost like felt, and the environments are bright and colorful and enjoyable to explore. Along with excellent graphics comes equally impressive music. The game mostly uses guitar and other string instruments but there is a good variety of all kinds of instruments and the music is excellent at fitting the mood and setting of the game. At no point is the music too scary, too extreme or too loud. Even when you would expect creepy music, the game does a good job of keeping it friendly for younger ages.

This game is an adventure RPG which means there are quests involved. Most of these quests involve treasure hunting which you will do by sniffing and following a radar. You have to learn different smells of different kinds of items to progress and sometimes to find other items. Along with the usual quests there are also side missions you can do that include finding all types of flowers in the game, all types of fruit in the game, fishing all types of fish and catching all types of bugs. All of these things are easy to understand and learn but challenging enough that they aren't easily accomplished in short time. These also are not needed to complete the game which means you can play through the game and still have things to do, which means the game has excellent replayability. There are enemies in this game located in the various areas, but you can't kill them. Your main 'attack' is barking at them to scare them and make them faint, they do stay down for quite a while though. They can hurt you though, you have a life meter and once it runs out, game over. Honestly though I've only game over'd once and it was through curiosity of what would happen. It's very hard to actually lose, which means the enemies are little more than something you need to watch out for. Nothing serious, and the only 'fighting' in the game is the last boss which is a T-rex skeleton you 'beat' by pressing buttons. This makes this game highly appropriate for young kids if parents are willing to read the text to them. Could make for some interesting family time.

Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone with kids that like little adventure games that aren't quite as unforgiving as some of the more 'popular' RPGs in their difficulty and graphic content and it would also be good for people like me who simply love playing cute animal games that don't have any 'extreme' content in them, but if you're still unsure about whether you want to pay $20 for this game, I suggest trying to rent it and see if you or your kids like it. I think it's worth the price though, and I would pick it up now.
