Book Description

July 27, 2010 3 - 7 years450L (What's this?)
A picture-book treat for the youngest dog lovers.

Dog loves books SO much he opens his very own bookstore. At first he’s short of customers. But that’s all right, because when Dog is surrounded by books, he is never short of friends—or fun. And when customers begin arriving, he knows just which books to recommend.

Louise Yates’s expressive little white dog—and his many expressive doggie customers—extend an irresistible invitation to the very youngest to try reading. It’s fun!

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–A small white dog loves books so much that he decides to open his own bookstore. Unfortunately, no customers come, so he occupies his time by reading. He is engrossed in his imaginary adventures when his first real customer asks for a book. Of course, he knows exactly what to suggest. The simple story is accompanied by soft pastel pencil and watercolor drawings that give the book a whimsical, dreamy quality. Dog is surrounded by nonthreatening dinosaurs, space aliens, and other creatures when he is reading about them. Young children can enjoy the book by themselves by following the charming illustrations. Pair this gentle tale with a winning message with Tad Hills's How Rocket Learned to Read (Random, 2010) for a dogs-that-love-books storytime.Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

Dog had a slight grin on his face as he marched across the floor with a stack of books. He just LOVED them! It was fun to stick his little snout in between the pages and take a little whiff. It was even grand to put a book on the floor, spread the pages, and just spread right out across them. Books were such heavenly things to have. Well, Dog loved them so much "that he decided to open his own bookstore." A few wide-eyed dogs watched him pass by. He was a regular walking billboard and one man band rolled into one. His grand opening would be soon and he wanted everyone to come (to buy his books of course!).

Boxes of books came and he prepared them for the shelves. Everything would be perfect for the "Grand Opening." Dog even dolled up on the day of the opening. He scrubbed a dub dubbed in the tub, used his blue hair dryer to fluff up his fur, and honked into a hankie for good measure. He even had balloons tied along the staircase and when he "threw open the door" not a soul was there. After a while one daffy woman came and ordered a "tea with milk and two sugars" because she saw his tray and then another man came and asked for directions. It was a sad state of affairs. He decided to read to pass the time and the dinos began to emerge from the pages. With the next book the store came alive with kangaroos, and then space aliens with another. Poor Dog. Was he ever going to have any customers in his store?

When Dog and his fanciful pile of books come romping into your house, you'll be charmed by this devoted reader. Everyone who loves books will be able to appreciate Dog's disappointment when a slew of customers doesn't come marching through his doors at the "Grand Opening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just a wonderful picture book about books November 3, 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is just a wonderful book with lovely art and a passionate statement about the value of books. It is what I would buy for any kid. If they like dogs, that's an added bonus. I hope that she follows up with Cat Loves Books, Baby Loves Books, Dog Loves Books T-shirts, mugs, and calendars. As a children's librarian, this has quickly become one of my favorite books to offer parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Most Creative Dog! September 3, 2010
Format:Hardcover
Thank you Louise Yates! I Love 'Dog Loves Books'! This book would be great to read to a group of children. We are reading it for Story Time at our store. My favorite part is Dog's very expressive ears. I also love the picture where Dog is blissing-out whilst lying on a book. Another favorite is the last page (I won't spoil the ending). I also love the fantasy of Dog reading on the job. I know no booksellers who get to read at work, but what a lovely picture. I want to shop at Dog's Book Store!

3.0 out of 5 stars But Kids, Not So Much March 22, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a three year old I understand trucks, fuzzy bunnies, balloons, trains, and talking silly chickens. I have more of a problem with inventory control at a bookstore in a poor foot traffic location.

I also have a problem with books that bully me and hector me or try to sell me on the importance of books, and the wonder of books, and the excitement of books, and the great smell of books, without being a particularly good book. Eat your spinach; brush your teeth; love books. Got it. Rather, just put a bunch of neat books out and I'll figure out the importance, wonder and excitement for myself.

I don't mean to sound so nasty, (the illustrations are charming, the intentions are certainly good), but, despite my honest effort, I have not made it all the way to the end of this book with any of my grandchildren. Each one has wiggled out of my lap about half way through, and then returned with a book to be read that he or she actually likes. And the fact that this book doesn't seem to fully engage kids is, after all, the most important point.

I am 5 years old and I love books. This dog is so cute that I would like to go to his bookstore. It's funny that he reads his books and forgets he is in the store.
Cute and funny book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids that are just beginning reading. April 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I liked when Dog thought that he was in the story.

This book is perfect for me because I know most of the words by sight, and I can sound out the rest.

Reader, age 6.
