5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and instructive guide to quality time with your dog!
I gave this book to my friend, who adores her dog, and is in dog shows and competitions (Golden Retrievers)
She loves it.
She said it was fun to read, and she really is enjoying Maryjean Ballners techniques. They are well explained and easy to follow, with photos, showing the actual massages. I gave Maryjeans other book "Cat Massage" to another friend of...

1.0 out of 5 stars Insipid and repetitive
The first 56 pages are repetitive lists of kitschy phrases like "no-mo" and "fast n'frisky," plus endless warnings to stop if your dog isn't interested or doesn't like it (especially fur ruffling!). Well, duh. It's really written for someone who doesn't know their canine "companion" very well at all (oh the irony), and it's completely goofy...

She said it was fun to read, and she really is enjoying Maryjean Ballners techniques. They are well explained and easy to follow, with photos, showing the actual massages. I gave Maryjeans other book "Cat Massage" to another friend of mine, and he said all his neighbors are passing it around, and he hasn't even got a chance to read it yet!
So for me, these books make a great gift for my pet loving friends.

Well, duh. It's really written for someone who doesn't know their canine "companion" very well at all (oh the irony), and it's completely goofy. Linda Tellington-Jones writes much better animal therapy books.

This is one of those books which should be on every dog owner's shelf. Dog Massage gives you a complete guide plus careful instructions for getting your dog used to massage and getting him to enjoy it. A real winner!

2.0 out of 5 stars Useful to a select few., March 18, 2008
This review is from: Dog Massage: A Whiskers-to-Tail Guide to Your Dog's Ultimate Petting Experience (Paperback)
(I'd give it 2.5 if I could.)

"Never give a dog any kind of massage if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs."
"A dog's private parts are just that - private - to be left alone and not to be touched by you."
If you feel that the preceding are not obvious statements, then this book may be for you!

A good portion of the writing in this book is similar to the quoted advice above, or "stop if your dog doesn't like it" reiterated. (The book as it is, is thin.) The remaining is massage techniques that are well described with accompanying pictures.

This book could be useful if you were really serious about learning more professional techniques and giving your dog(s) a thorough massage. For the average person however, I would say borrow it or skim through it in a store for the amusing cautions. A lot of the advice in this book is fairly obvious to anyone who makes an effort to understand their dog(s) and keep them happy, and the rest is over the top.

Bottom line: If you've ever successfully massaged someone's back, and you know how your dog(s) likes to be touched, then you don't need this book.

This book was purchased as a gift for my wife, a professional massage therapist, who is expanding her expertise to include pet massage. She was delighted with the book and thought it to be more educational than some of her formal textbooks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute book, October 19, 2007
This review is from: Dog Massage: A Whiskers-to-Tail Guide to Your Dog's Ultimate Petting Experience (Paperback)
I bought this book because my dog is ALWAYS wanting me to rub his belly. I wanted to shower him with some more affection, and I thought I would give this book a try.

Although some of the tips are quite obvious (example: if your dog starts to nip, bite, or growl at a certain technique, you should stop that technique immediately) there is some good stuff in there.

I think this book would be good for people who have older dogs, or ones with joint, hip, or arthiritis issues. Your pooches will thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginning massage therapy on your dog, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Dog Massage: A Whiskers-to-Tail Guide to Your Dog's Ultimate Petting Experience (Paperback)
This is a wonderful first book on massage, and it has been equally loved by even our daughter (as young as 10 yrs old, giving the massage) and our furry sibes (receiving the massage). "Dog Massage" gives very easy to understand steps toward giving a relaxing and enjoyable pampered experience. Most dogs love being pet, but this book turns that pet into an optimal massage...that has our huskies asking for more. This does more than a pat on the head and rubbing behind the ears. The author writes in a way that is entertaining & easy for even those with little patience on reading. Even the simplest massage therapy practiced on dogs, can help with creating an even stronger bond...helping them feel that much more loved.

MY 90 YEAR OLD FATHER HAS BEEN GIVING MY 3 YEAR OLD AKITA A MASSAGE SINCE COMING HOME. WHEN I SAW THE AUTHOR ON LETTERMAN, I HAD TO MAKE SURE THAT THE DOG GAVE IT TO HIM FOR A CHRISTMAS PRESENT. HIS ANSWER WAS THAT HE WAS "CONSULTED" ON THE WRITTING OF THE BOOK. IT IS CUTE AND HAS MANY FACTS ON MASSAGE ON A DOG AS WELL AS HOW TO READ THE DOG'S FEELINGS. LAST YEAR HE GOT A T-SHIRT WITH "LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY GRANDDOG" WRITTEN ON IT FROM THE DOG. YES THE AKITA IS SPOILED AND VERY MUCH LOVED, DAD TOO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog Massage book great deal!, June 1, 2009
This review is from: Dog Massage: A Whiskers-to-Tail Guide to Your Dog's Ultimate Petting Experience (Paperback)
Perfect book for someone like me that just wants to make sure I can make my German Shepherd feel good relief after a good hike or bike jog. If I'm sore, she probably is.
The book is in great condition, affordable, not a novel in length, easy to read and easy to understand. Didn't know there was so much involved in the dogs responses, etc. Great for our down time and perfect for me.
Completely satisfied.
