Blues with depth and a touch of Indian soul,
By
This review is from: Dog My Cat (Audio CD)
I have owned this record for a couple of years now and it gives me a good feeling every time I play it. It is mainly a blues record, drawing on the "deep river" of the blues tradition but it also draws on Harry's experiences in India. He plays both a slide guitar and an instument called a Mohan veena, a cross between a guitar and a sitar. Most of the 13 tracks are either classic blues numbers or Harry's own blues compositions, but 3 tracks are very much in the Indian tradition - he calls them "rags" but they sound more like ragas. He uses the Mohan veena sparingly and effectively on the blues numbers in such a way that he never leaves the province of the blues but brings India along for the ride. It's great, understated music with a generally very mellow feel.

This guy rocks, although in a rather unconventional way. He is a master guitarist, and he seems to draw from old American traditional feels, but somehow blends it with an exquisite eastern vibe.. He might be a genius.

Sultry Meditative Blues,

This is Manx's first CD and is full of great deeply felt and played blues. He is a wonderful musician playing equally well on Lap Slide, Mohan Veena (the 20 stringed Indian slide), and Harmonica while singing in a mellow expressive way (a bit like Van Morrison on ASTRAL WEEKS). It is hard to believe he is playing alone sometimes (the liner notes say he is with only the occational overdub). I love this stuff and highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates great slide playing, especially for its transformative/meditiative quality.

Bring this thing back home. This guy is great. I challenge all you pickers out there not to pick up your guitar and play along. What a great mix of feelings in these tunes. I don't know where Harry was hidden till now, but I've got the second disc and I'll stand in line for the third.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF BLUES,
This review is from: Dog My Cat (Audio CD)
I found Harry Manx by accident and became hooked. Within a few weeks I had most of his music and play it all the time. I love his laid back style and his musical abilities. I guess it is the kind of music that soothes the soul. I have turned my friends and relatives on to his music because I think the good stuff in life should be shared. So I highly recommend this artist to those who are appriciative of music that inspires and that touchs the heart..
