5.0 out of 5 stars I REALLY like this album - and I don't even have a dog! September 3, 2007
Format:Audio CD
Though he spent the much of his career known as "Bonnie Raitt's bassist", the single-named Freebo does have a voice and can play a lot more instruments than the Fretless bass he's been known for. This album proves he can write songs too.

The theme here is songs about "man's best friend" and it makes for a nioce cohesive album. Freebo wrote, or co-wrote half the eight songs includes here and gets to ply the acoustic guitar and mandolele as well as his signature bass. The other numbers include Neil Young's "Old King" and the Red Foley classic "Old Shep". (The traditional "Old Blue" rounds out the trio of titles starting with the word "old".

This is a happy and loving collection. "Shaggy" starts things off on a hot note and "My Dog Has Fleas" is downright funky, with a great Memphis horn arrangement. "Lester" (by Neil Finn) is relaxed and Freebo's voice blends beautifully with David McKelvy's harmonica. Young's "Old King" has a country twang to it with Mark Shark on a nice dobro solo. (Most of the songs exceed four minutes so there's room for some nice instrumental breaks.).

For "She's My D.O.G." a self-penned honky tonk number with Freebo's own dog Garbo sharing lead vocals with her owner. (Really!) And, Albert Lee and Jerry Donahue play dueling electric guitars to boot!

If you own a canine, you'll just love this album. Even if - like me - you don't you'll still love it and reply it a lot. The only fault I could find was that I didn't want the disc to end. Hey, maybe he'll put together "Dog People II"!

I really liked this album which is a real tribute to dogs and how much we love them and what a huge part they play in our lives and our search for happiness. I remember this artist from Edison Electric, a great Philadelphia band, and also Bonnie Raitt. Thanks for the great music, DF.
