Book Description

August 1, 2002
Celebrate America’s long love affair with the dog in this beautiful little book. "The Dog in the Picture" pairs vintage photographs with timeless comments from old letters and diaries. Delight in words and pictures as you discover the constancies in the canine-human relationship. You’ll find that our great-great grandparents praised good dogs for the same virtues we value today. They wrote about bad dogs – the neighbor’s or their own – with a sorely-tried patience. Historians and sisters, Jane Brackman and Barbara Brackman connect you to the past with glimpses of the dog’s age-old place in the human heart.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

We are two sisters with a lifelong love of dogs. While both of us are researchers and proven story-tellers, Jane’s professional experience is with dogs, and Barbara is a published popular history author. Our book is a collaboration of our diverse fields. Jane’s interest in the dog as a cultural topic began when she managed a guide dog school. Her unique insight into dogs and people partnerships contributes to the book theme. Barbara is a free-lance writer, historian and museum curator with seven published books on quilts and numerous museum catalogs to her credit. Many of the quotes used in our book are the result of Barbara’s well proven talent of sleuthing old newspapers, journals, and diaries to personalize history and make it entertaining. The authors are available for lectures and book signings. For more information, please write to Jane Brackman at jbrac@earthlink.net.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, so-so presentation., September 1, 2005

This review is from: The Dog in the Picture (Paperback)
The authors of this slim volume have collected some charming old photographs of people with their dogs. Identifying the subjects was nearly impossible, so while they sometimes had a date to go with the picture, they rarely had much more. So, they paired the photographs with quotations from diaries and memoirs, seeking to more fully describe the meaning of the picture. Unfortunately, and surprisingly for historians, the quotations are often from another time period. I wish they had trusted the images to tell their own story. I also wish there was some kind of informed presentation about human relationships with dogs over time. Veterinary practices were much different at the turn of the century for example, and certainly impacted how animals were treated and regarded. The formatting of the pages is visually awkward, and sometimes the reproduction of the photograph could have been more skillful. This is a cute coffee table presentation, but not much more.

The book is interesting and I loved the photographs, however there is little information about the photographs leaving the reader to speculate.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Healing Power of Dogs, October 23, 2009
This review is from: The Dog in the Picture (Paperback)
It's lovely to see that dogs had their healing effect on humans not only recently, when so many people are getting dogs, but throughout the years, at least since photography was invented. This book must have been a lot of work to collect so many nice photos. Many of the photos make you smile. This is my second favorite dog book after Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs, which is about the scientific evidence that our bond with our dogs is healing to us.Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs
