Book Description

Jackanory S December 31, 1994
For months, Ben had been thinking about dogs. He had picked the biggest and the best from the dog-books in the library. So imagine his disappointment when, for his birthday, Ben receives a picture of a dog. Ben's imagination soon got to work, however.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Ben Blewitt yearns for a dog of his own, yet for his birthday he receives just a picture of a dog. However, the picture sends his imagination into overdrive, and Ben ends up experiencing some unusual adventures. The happy ending with the Blewitts moving to a new home with room for a real dog will please pet lovers. The story by Philippa Pearce (Lippincott, 1962) is set in London, and narrator Jenny Agutter's British accent will entertain American listeners. Ben's longing, his grandfather's regret, and his father's pragmatism all come through in the voices Agutter employs in this well-crafted audio version. Purchasing a new copy of the book in the U.S. that is not large print version will be a challenge.
