Broken down into very easy to understand (& remember) steps,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dog Tricks: Step by Step (Hardcover)
I first read "Dog Tricks: New Tricks for Old Dogs, Old Tricks for New Dogs, and Ageless Tricks...", and though I found it amusing and a little helpful, I ran into problems if my dog did not immediately pick up on the trick. That's why I purchased "Step by Step." It's broken down extremely well, helps you understand your dog and his learning ability, and therefore helps you teach your dog the tricks. At first I thought it a little repetitive, but found that the synopsis after the longer explanation makes it easy to go back later to double check what you're doing.

OKAY,

I first read Captain Haggerty and CArol Benjamin's Dog Tricks TeachingYour Dog to be Useful, Fun and Entertaining and I then found this book which I did not think was as comprehensive as the Haggerty book, although it was a nice little book. In fact, I felt like with some tricks in this book they were coming straight from Haggety's book. The Haggerty book has a LOT more tricks too and are easier to follow. That is a classic.

This book is cute but too wordy. The format for each trick did not work as well for me as much as The Idiot's Complete Guide to Dog Tricks. Glad I didn't pay much for the book.

My behaviorist/trainer suggested this book and I am happy that she did. I found the section on drives that dogs have to be very helpful. The drives are pack, prey, and defense -both fight and flight. The author explains that some tricks are easier for some dogs, given how much specific drives are needed to teach each trick. For example, two of my dogs just won't kiss my face, while two others can easily be taught the command for this trick. I didn't need the sections that focus on the very basics, the sit, down and stay - including using them for waiting at the door. Some people will find this section useful, other owners will have already mastered these commands.
So only about half the book is spent on teaching cute tricks, but I liked how she explained them. This may not be the only book on tricks that I purchase, since I have one circus dog, but I am happy to have this one.

Meh,

Somewhat useful. I find many of these dog trick books to be virtually identical. This one was no different. It roughly works, but not all that engaging and limited in what it teaches, which is fine I guess, since we're talking about dogs. If you try to teach your dog the encyclopedia, you probably need some training of your own.
