If they could fix that issue, I could give it 5 stars!

The dogs would step on the platform and the water would run into the hose, but would leak out of the area in which it should have been spraying up like a fountain.

August 2014 Update

I have removed my previous review including my modifications to make this product work as I can't recommend getting this fountain.

I have been using the API version of the Original fountain, found at DoggieFountain .com. Only 1 in 3 of the API version had a year long lifespan and it did not survive last winter, the other two did not last a month. I really wanted to give it 5 stars as it is a great product when it works and the company was great about providing a quick replacement for the faulty units.

The original fountain is wonderful and you should grab one if you can find it.

I have VERY destructive dogs so just hooking it up to the water hose and going on my way will not work for me. My final assembly recommendation for dogs who destroy all that is in their reach includes direct piping or in my case PEX pipe, to prevent burst pipe during freezing weather, with sharkbite fittings placed in pipe insulation and slid into pvc pipe and run to the site of the fountain. I use a Y connector at the faucet and at the fountain to adjust the water flow and provide alternate hose attachment points.

The Original DoggieFountain I am now using is located on the drip line east of my trees where it will get morning sun for the UV sterilization benefits (my dogs slurp all over the top of the fountain) but by the afternoon it is in the shade to keep the pedal from heating up. I also added an anti siphon valve as insurance against bacteria back flowing into the "hose." The fountain is bolted to a 75lb cement pad (16" square) on a 6" deep X 3' radius bed of gravel over a French drain that runs to my trees and bushes and is covered by stall mats and 3' square anti fatigue mats to keep the dogs from digging up the roots or drain.

First lets start with construction:
The fountain is made of sturdy metal, not some cheap plastic toy. the hose attachment works well and feels like copper. I will say that the hose can come loose from the base of the fountain if pulled on, but it is not hard to put back. Perhaps get a clamp to promise it sticks. Precision Brand M4P Micro Seal, Miniature Partial Stainless Worm Gear Hose Clamp, 7/32" - 5/8" (Pack of 10)

Function and Training:
This product works great if you can train your dog to step on it. I have a 2 year old Rot-mix and it took about a week to get her comfortable with this fountain. First off, train your dog when they are thirsty. Sounds like common sense, but honestly the more they want water the more agreeable they are to step on this metal square. I recommend treat luring to get the dog to 'walk' over the fountain and then reward when they accidentally trigger it. Also note that they will be sprayed in the face a few times when they first step on it. I suggest a valve later in this review that can be used to lower the pressure for in the beginning.

Reward:
I can now leave my two dogs in the backyard for a entire afternoon without worrying about them getting thirsty, and without leaving open water bowls to get dirty or breed insects in. If you live in a area like me, spring is the worst time because mosquitoes breed in still water. Well now I dont have to worry about my dog bowls being the problem.

Thoughts for better function:
I recommend getting a control valve

It works great. I have a German Shepherd and it took her a total of 2 hours to figure out how to work it. Very durable and adjustable. Whenever we're playing and she needs a drink, she stops, trots over to the fountain, gets a drink and then it's back to paying. You do have to keep the hose in the shade as the hose sitting in the sun will make the water quite hot. I always bleed out the water until it's cool and then I let her drink. I have it attached to a short 10 foot hose so the bleeding process only takes a few seconds.

I just ordered a second one because I left the first one out during a cold snap (5-10 degrees) and pretty much killed it. It could be a little better constructed but it lasted all last summer and would probably have given lasted another.

It only took about a half hour for my lab to figure it out. The first week or so, though, he wanted to claw at it as well and pulled the hose loose. I just added a better hose clamp.

When he pulled the hose off he proceeded to dig a deep muddy hole in my yard. More funny than anything.

I also caught him holding it on for my neighbors dog who hadn't figured it out.

Excellent product; must not expose the hose to the Sun in order not to heat up the water.
The dog learns fast, it is lots of fun.

My dog did not want to try it but I was working with her and I think I would of got her to use it on her own sooner or later. As I was holding down the peddle for her every now and then it would stick and not shut off.

Also (something I dont think can be helped) the hose builds up a lot of pressure and when the valve first opens it shoots a small amount of water very high (depending on your water pressure) into the air. That would freak out my dog because she would go to get a drink and shoot herself in the face with water. That made it very hard for me to get her to use it.

I may try to see if there is a way for me to make the valve not stick.

If the valve did not stick I would give this 5 stars.
