Brilliant parody of the presidential election process,
This review is from: Dog vs. Cat: A Nation Divided: Dirty Tricks and Other Shock (Paperback)
Don Asmussen has a great knack for highlighting the absurdities in politics and current events. Being a fan of his Bad Reporter comic, I had to check this out, and I was not disappointed. The book is basically an account - fictional, obviously - of a presidential race between two pet candidates. There's the incumbent, a German Shepherd named Spot. He's been running an increasingly unpopular "War on squirels" (they hate our freedom). The Cat Party challenger is Mittens, described as "moody, aloof, and always hard to find (on issues)." There's a rich layer of detail put into this book, and if you follow politics (or happen to be a pet owner) you'll find this rewarding and very funny read. My one complaint is that it's too short, but regardless this book is definitely worth checking out.

If you like to laugh, and like your laughs in book form, you really could not do better than Asmussen's exquisitely uproarious book. And for all those people who are off put but what happens in litter boxes and don't really like what cats are all about, then that's all the more reason to buy this book.
I once met Asmussen at a coffee shop in the Marina. He was quite handsome and smelled of lavender. Are you one of those people who always think that cartoonists are all about big egos, flashy wardrobes and necklaces and driving their Bentleys up on the curb like I used to be? Because Asmussen couldn't have been nicer and was cool with me fawning all over him. Thanks Don, I'll never forget that day or this book! |
