Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is Hughes' most heartwarming picture book ... Hughes has a kindly, inexhaustible eye - she misses nothing ... Her drawing is invariably superb and usually describes a reassuring world for children - sometimes happier-than-thou. She has illustrated more than 200 titles - she is a virtuoso" -- Kate Kellaway Observer "Shirley Hughes is a national treasure" -- Philip Pullman "Delightful" Financial Times "A heart-warming story ... Shirley Hughes' warm and deceptively simple story is a perennial favourite among children and experts alike" Psychologies Magazine "There are certain books that should be in every family's library and Dogger is certainly one of them" Books for Children

I have given over 15 copies of Dogger to friends and family when they have an arrival of a second child. Every one of them...every.one.of.them has loved it and weeks/months/years later, I still get glowing feedback on this book.
The way the older child (Bella) helps out her little brother (Dave) when he looses Dogger makes me and anyone I've ever given the story to sniffle at the beauty and kindness of text and illustrations.
Face it, when you were little and you miss placed your favorite toy/lovey, you basically went to DEFCON 5 alert status and nothing was right until your lovey was found. Now as a parent, you know if your child loses their lovey, nothing in your house will be settled until it is found and you would do anything ( beg, bribe and possibly liquidate your IRA to make your child happy (and sleep through the night) again. Bella is every mother's heroine.
She teaches the selfless act of helping and giving better than I ever could.
This book is getting harder to find, so buy it right now to help keep it in print. I need more copies for the next round of friends having children.

Just as the story's Dave asks, "Where's Dogger?" so does my
son. We have both fallen in love with this story of a small
boy who loses his beloved stuffed Dogger, only to find him
sitting on a "For Sale" table at a carnival. But Dave
doesn't have enough money to buy him, so he goes to find
Mom or Dad, or big sister Bella. He and Bella return only
to discover that Dogger has been bought by another little
girl, who won't give him up. Dave cries. The little girl
cries. My son almost cries. Can Bella help? Read the
book and see why, after repeatedly checking this one out
from the library, we had to buy a copy of our own.

I read dogger to my friend's children many years ago. To this day it remains a firm favourite with me, I even bought a copy for my nephew before he was born ! The pictures are bright and colourful, the text easy for the children to follow but most of all it is fun to read.
Dogger is tops in my opinion, and I have to confess I read it myself whenever I am feeling down ! Shirley Hughes puts the child back in me and for that I thank her most heartedly.

I love Shirley Hughes, her illustrations are realistic and detailed enough to allow plenty to pore over. But the story is what shines in this book. David loses his "dogger" and Bella, his sister, helps him get it back. Very few children books model the kind, caring side of a sibling relationship. This one shows kids how a good family can help each other out. I, too, get a tear in my eye every time I read it and my children ask for it again and again. It is in no way sappy or sentimental, it simply rings true. You will not go wrong with this book, and if you have more than one child--it's a must!

This book tells about a little boy, Doug, who loses his favorite stuffed animal, Dogger. The whole family helps him search for it. I really like the way the book reflects the caring way the family members in the book treat each other. My almost 3-year old daughter loves this book!

This book has an engaging story, and charming illustrations. And the way that the sister shows love for her brother rings true - children really act like this, when they're at their best. Any child who has a favorite stuffed toy will get caught up in the story, in the suspense, and in the happy ending. Shirley Hughes is a British author, and an observant reader can see that the setting doesn't look like America. This book,as well as other Shirley Hughes books, could be used for multi-cultural education, though the differences that can be found between Britain and America are subtle.

Shirley Hughes writes with the perspecive of a child. The result is clear, simple, and touching.

This story deals with the loss and eventual recovery of a favourite toy. This theme has universal appeal to younger readers.<BR

Dave's favorite toy is a stuffed toy named Dogger. He carries him everywhere and depends on him to help him go to sleep. One morning, while out with his mother, meeting his older sister Bella at school, Dogger disappears. When bedtime comes, Dogger is nowhere to be found, and although Bella loans him one of her teddies, he is very sad during the night. In the morning at the school fair, Dave is too sad to have fun, and he wanders off from the rest of his family. At one of the used-toy stands he is shocked to see Dogger for sale. He runs to find his parents, but finds only Bella, who returns to the stand with him just in time to see another child walk away with Dogger. Bella saves the day, trading her new teddy bear for the worn old Dogger.

This well-written story begins with concrete details and builds to a dramatic crisis and resolution that any child who's had a "lovey" can identify with. Hughes' artwork is wonderfully rendered, with a particular eye to details that emphasize the warmth and closeness of this family. Most importantly, Bella's open-hearted self-sacrifice epitomizes the kindness that siblings ought to express toward one another. Elder and younger siblings will appreciate this story for different reasons.
