Great but has it's faults,
By Kelly Dillman (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doggie Cuts (DVD)
Like most people who'll buy this DVD, I wanted to save some money and save my dog the stress of the groomer visit. This DVD was a great component in my learning how to groom at home. The DVD shows 4 basic doggie cuts, and they vary enough that you can apply one or a combination of techniques to your dog. There were many hints about dog bathing/health care that were very helpful. Based on talking to my dog's previous groomer and watching the very brief video that came with the clippers I bought, I had been able to groom my dog for over a year. But after watching the DVD I was able to finally give my dog an almost professional looking haircut. The DVD does have some faults. The main one is that they're all small dogs. My 50 pound terrier/cattle dog mix is not easy to pick up and turn in the position you want. I definitely needed my husband to help out during the trim. I wish Patrick Murdock would've trimmed a big dog, and maybe shown the proper techniques to using a harness. A technical drawback is that the DVD is just one track. You think they would make a separate track for each dog style but that isn't the case. This makes it extremely hard to get to a certain section for review. You just have to fast forward and hope you don't miss it. Still, it's a great DVD to own for the at-home groomer.

Thrilled about this one, very satisfied,

I was very excited and hopeful about buying this video. After viewing it for myself, I was thrilled to find out that it covered everything I needed to know about cutting the hair on my adopted long-haired mixed breed dog. I was especially happy to finally learn how to trim the long hair on Sammy's body, particularly the straight cut across the bottom. All the basic cuts were shown for a complete haircut including trimming around the eyes, ears, feet, chin, the belly area, tail, the rear end, etc. (even a top knot was shown for a poodle). Everything is demonstrated to give any kind of dog a full haircut from front to back, top to bottom. Four breeds of dogs were used (Yorkie, Schnauzer, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle), so you learn and apply any or all of the many techniques to your own particular breed of dog, resulting in the style that you desire. I thought that I would need assistance keeping Sammy still while I cut his hair, but I didn't. (The groomer explained exactly how to calm him down before and during the entire grooming session, and it really worked.) The video also showed me how to safely trim Sammy's toenails so I don't have to pay someone to do that anymore. It even shows you how to brush your dog's teeth, proper bathing, etc. Each of the segments on the DVD were very easy to find, and rewinding and fast forwarding to review any part that you want is very easy--you only have to know how to use the proper buttons on your DVD remote--it was very simple. Out of all the many grooming videos I have purchased, this is the only one that I would recommend if you want to give your dog a safe and complete haircut. It's a terrific DVD for teaching at-home grooming.

This was purchased on a lark when I wanted to groom my Maltese to save money on expensive grooming salons. The step by step instructions are easy to follow in a conversational manner which is easy to listen to and the animals are the perfect subjects. I learned the basics inside of one intensive afternoon of practice and though I'm not ready to show my pooch at Westminster, I certainly will save a small fortune in grooming fees each year thanks to this tape.

NO MORE TEARS!!!,

This review is from: Doggie Cuts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
After putting my Westie through one horrific grooming experience after another (mistreatment, all nails bleeding, being left in a noose on a grooming table unattended, just to name a few), and changing groomers over 4 times in the last year, I decided that the only person I could trust to treat my pet in a loving, gentle and caring way was me. I chose Kevin Duvall's video because of the excellent reviews that others posted. They were absolutely right on! This tape delivers! Understandable instructions, clear close-ups and great tips on techniques to help your pet be relaxed and enjoy being groomed. Packed with exceptional demonstrations about proper bathing and tips on pet health too. I have paid up to $50.00 per grooming session only to have my pet be mis-treated and mis-handled. No more! Thank you Kevin, for producing this excellent video!

Basic Haircutting/Grooming & Total Healthcare for any Dog!,
By Alberto and Beatrice Huerta (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doggie Cuts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We were pleasantly surprised to find this video so useful and complete! Not only does it show you all the basic haircutting techniques that can be applied to virtually any breed of dog, it also demonstrates how to trim your dog's nails and how to brush their teeth, and more...things we knew should be done, but never saw demonstrated before! DOGGIE CUTS even alerted us to many things that we were doing wrong, including simple bathing and hair drying. And, it taught us warning signs to look for regarding skin diseases and other eye and ear problems, etc. The dog groomer demonstrating the haircutting was so friendly and personable that we felt like we were being taught one-on-one in our own kitchen! He shared many of his "secret groomer tips" that made the whole grooming experience simple and relaxed, making learning how to cut our own dog's hair easy and fun! And, we were amazed at how calm our Yorkshire Terrier stayed while we were cutting his hair for the very first time, all because of the groomer's advice and instruction! (We know too that our dog was happier and suffered far less stress because we were doing the fussing over him instead of a stranger!) And, you can't imagine how proud we felt when the first person who saw the results of our work complimented us on how great our dog's haircut looked and asked us where we got it done! Lastly, it was entertaining to see and listen to actor Dick Van Patten as the celebrity host for DOGGIE CUTS. He is a genuine person who we all trust, and we have read about what a great dog lover he is himself! (And, we will never forget him as dad "Tom Bradford" on Eight is Enough.) The high quality sets and attention to detail obvious throughout the entire ninety minutes far exceeds what one would expect from any instructional video. We would certainly recommend DOGGIE CUTS to every person who owns a dog, even if it's a breed that doesn't require haircutting. The health maintenance information alone is invaluable and can help you prevent "doggie illnesses" that can lead to costly vet bills. We have purchased several of these videos and given them as wonderfully unique gifts to our friends and family! Thank you, DOGGIE CUTS!

Simple and effective--this video tops them all!,

To be honest, I put off learning how to groom my own dogs for years because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to do it myself and that my rambunctious dogs would not sit still for it. Also, I was uncertain that any video that I might find would not apply to the breeds of dogs that I have--a cocker spaniel, a poodle, and a Lhasa Apso. But this video has taught me all the cuts necessary to groom all of of them! Thankfully, it also demonstrates the secrets of how to keep even the most uncooperative dog calm during the entire grooming session.I manage a dog adoption center, and the Doggie Cuts video has taught me how to cut the hair on schnauzers, yorkshire terriers, poodles, malteses, cocker spaniels, shih tzus, pomeranians, shelties, bichons, scotties, most all terriers, and about a zillion mixed breeds! It demonstrates in detail all the basic cuts necessary to groom most any breed of dog. I have been recommending this video to every person that adopts any of our abused or abandoned doggie friends because, in addition to the actual haircutting, it also gives great veterinary advice and information on maintaining your dog's health, and it shows you how to brush their teeth and trim their toenails as well--essential care for any and all dogs. When I think of all the money that I have paid groomers in the past just for my own dogs, and all the stress they experienced after I dropped them off, well, I'll just say that I and my dogs are relieved and very happy that I am now doing the grooming myself! I also plan to use my new-found grooming skills to open my own doggie salon in our adoption center to earn extra income that will be used to improve and expand our services to help even more of our homeless friends in the future.

Excellent Content - Highly Recommended,
By Antoine Love (Westlake Village, CA) - See all my reviews

This superb video effectively covers everything from A to Z, and then some. I am a professional groomer, and I am extremely satisfied with the vast content of this video. It is the first and only grooming video that I have viewed that I would recommend for home grooming. All the essentials are there for a complete and good-looking haircut. The Certified Master Groomer in the video is excellent, as are his easy to follow techniques, which effectively covers every basic major breed including any mixed breed dog. His simple haircutting techniques will enable the home groomer to easily cut and groom any type of hair on virtually any dog. (I was even able to pick up a few new things that will improve my own professional haircutting technique.) The quality of the video is superior. The cuts are shown in great detail--and they are not rushed--simple and easily learned, both clipping and scissoring. As a professional groomer, I was very impressed. I was also pleased that the groomer took the necessary time to demonstrate how to keep the dogs calm and well behaved throughout the entire grooming session. This important information is helpful in calming even very aggressive dogs, which is very important for maintaining a safe grooming session. There were numerous other grooming tips throughout the entire video covering safety, preparation, hygiene (including cleaning the ears and teeth, etc.), bathing, toenail clipping, etc. If you are serious about learning home grooming, I highly recommend the Doggie Cuts video (I purchased the DVD format) to use as your guide. Take good care of your pets! :o)

MOST EXCELLENT DOG GROOMING VIDEO,
By A Customer
This review is from: Doggie Cuts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have been a big fan of Doggie Cuts since 1996. This video is very complete and modern and clear. I was so relieved when I watched it through that very first time because then I knew that it covered more than everything that I needed to know to successfully learn how to cut my own dog's beautiful hair. I didn't expect such a bounty of detailed haircutting techniques demonstrated by the pleasant groomer who spoke and instructed so patiently. He carefully explained everything that he was doing as he was doing it, and all the hair trimming and everything he did was clearly and safely shown in detail. I was initially afraid that I wouldn't be able to keep up and that I wouldn't catch on fast enough, or that I just wouldn't be able to actually do it, but it was truly easy for me. I believe that every basic cut for any and all dogs was accurately shown, making this video helpful for anyone (in my opinion), and forever eliminating the need for a professional groomer (and the perpetual expense of one). But again, the good thing was that it was all easy for me (a once-nervous beginner), and it wasn't scary at all. In fact, I enjoyed myself, and I was very pleased with even my very first haircut. I also learned how to keep my hyper little bundle of joy calm and relaxed while I washed him and cut his hair because the generous groomer shared all of his grooming tricks and secrets. Also worth mentioning is that there is surprisingly much more to this video than just learning a complete haircut. A veterinarian and her assistant started out talking about many important healthcare issues, then they demonstrated how to cut your dog's toenails and even how to brush their teeth. (I didn't even know you could brush a dog's teeth.) After that, they show you how to properly give your dog a bath, while still discussing more health and grooming topics. Also, Dick Van Patten often cuts in to offer good advice and healthcare tips, nutritional facts, etc. I learned a lot from all of this; what I was doing right, and even what I had been doing wrong for years. I bought this Doggie Cuts video from Amazon.com many years ago, and what a blessing it was for me and my beloved Yorkshire Terrier, who just recently passed away after we spent almost fifteen wonderful years together. My little friend and I were extremely close, and I always did anything and everything that would allow us to be together as much as possible. That was the main reason why I bought the video in the first place; so I could learn how to cut his hair myself, and I would never again have to leave him at the groomer's all day long. And, learn I did. I was able to cut and groom his hair myself for the past nine years (more than seventy times in all, I'm guessing), and we were both very grateful for the additional time together. I miss him so much now, I can't even tell you. But, Doggie Cuts taught me at-home grooming that eliminated a lot of stress for both of us, and that provided another way for us to spend more quality time together. A special thanks to those who cared enough to make this most excellent dog grooming video for everyone who wants the very best for their canine companions and friends.

I am a professional groomer, and I always like to review other groomers (especially certified master groomers) for good techniques. The groomer in this video is excellent, and his techniques are very easy to follow. Everything about the video was pretty good, except there wasn't enough content. If they had wanted to create a video like this, they should've covered every major breed (and there aren't that many of them) and differences, etc.. Perhaps a general discussion on teddy bear faces for mixed breeds, also. I understand that it is a video for home grooming, but if you don't have a Yorkie, cocker, poodle, or schnauzer - this video is very much worthless for you. (except for a few general tips about bathing and brushing) I also understand that it is not for professional groomers, but still - there could've been a lot more "meat" in it. They also did not cover important subjects like which dogs need hair pulled out of their ears and how to do this safely. Otherwise, I thought the video showed some very important tips on how to handle a dog on the table (in an imaginary world where all dogs are well-behaved)

This is the video that I SHOULD have bought first!,

This review is from: Doggie Cuts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought three other dog grooming videos before I finally found this one, but it was well worth waiting for, and it will more than make up for the money that I threw away on the others. There was no comparing the "upscale" quality found here, and it is ten times more informative and thorough than the lesser videos I bought. The grooming instruction was complete and effective, obviously well-planned, and not "thrown together". This is the only video that I would recommend for learning home dog grooming, especially if you have had no prior experience. It moves at the perfect pace for beginners and the equipment demonstrated is the type that you can easily and inexpensively purchase from your local pet store. This video offered a great deal more attention to detail of actual haircutting instruction than I would have expected, or that I found elsewhere. I also noted that the grooming instructor stressed the importance of safety concerns throughout his teachings. (Again, this was the only video to do so.) The haircuts were simple and easy to learn, as every cut was clearly shown exactly when the groomer described it. And, the pace was slow enough so he never got ahead of me. My wife and I groomed all three of our dogs with ease, and it was fun! The techniques were basic and thorough enough that I imagine they could be used to groom any kind of dog. Even a poodle was given a haircut! The video also demonstrated how to bathe your dog and dry the hair, how to trim the nails (even black toenails, thanks), and offered many other helpful hints that were a valuable bonus in this video--even how to brush doggie's teeth! (I have always brushed my cocker's teeth, but the video showed me how to do it correctly, as I wasn't before.) There were a lot of interesting computer animations throughout the video too, and even a couple of wonderful doggie cartoons to inspire and make learning fun! I also got a huge kick out of Dick Van Patten hosting the video along with his own dogs. Many of the other videos may look good and sound like they offer everything you need, but, like myself, you might be disappointed to find that they can be cheesy and lacking the necessary information required to even get you started. The icing on the cake was that Doggie Cuts cost less than the other videos I bought. Two thumbs up! |
