Great but has it's faults, February 22, 2004
Like most people who'll buy this DVD, I wanted to save some money and save my dog the stress of the groomer visit. This DVD was a great component in my learning how to groom at home.
The DVD shows 4 basic doggie cuts, and they vary enough that you can apply one or a combination of techniques to your dog. There were many hints about dog bathing/health care that were very helpful. Based on talking to my dog's previous groomer and watching the very brief video that came with the clippers I bought, I had been able to groom my dog for over a year. But after watching the DVD I was able to finally give my dog an almost professional looking haircut.
The DVD does have some faults. The main one is that they're all small dogs. My 50 pound terrier/cattle dog mix is not easy to pick up and turn in the position you want. I definitely needed my husband to help out during the trim. I wish Patrick Murdock would've trimmed a big dog, and maybe shown the proper techniques to using a harness.
A technical drawback is that the DVD is just one track. You think they would make a separate track for each dog style but that isn't the case. This makes it extremely hard to get to a certain section for review. You just have to fast forward and hope you don't miss it.
Still, it's a great DVD to own for the at-home groomer.

Thrilled about this one, very satisfied, April 4, 2004
I was very excited and hopeful about buying this video. After viewing it for myself, I was thrilled to find out that it covered everything I needed to know about cutting the hair on my adopted long-haired mixed breed dog. I was especially happy to finally learn how to trim the long hair on Sammy's body, particularly the straight cut across the bottom. All the basic cuts were shown for a complete haircut including trimming around the eyes, ears, feet, chin, the belly area, tail, the rear end, etc. (even a top knot was shown for a poodle). Everything is demonstrated to give any kind of dog a full haircut from front to back, top to bottom. Four breeds of dogs were used (Yorkie, Schnauzer, Cocker Spaniel, Poodle), so you learn and apply any or all of the many techniques to your own particular breed of dog, resulting in the style that you desire.
I thought that I would need assistance keeping Sammy still while I cut his hair, but I didn't. (The groomer explained exactly how to calm him down before and during the entire grooming session, and it really worked.) The video also showed me how to safely trim Sammy's toenails so I don't have to pay someone to do that anymore. It even shows you how to brush your dog's teeth, proper bathing, etc.
Each of the segments on the DVD were very easy to find, and rewinding and fast forwarding to review any part that you want is very easy--you only have to know how to use the proper buttons on your DVD remote--it was very simple.
Out of all the many grooming videos I have purchased, this is the only one that I would recommend if you want to give your dog a safe and complete haircut. It's a terrific DVD for teaching at-home grooming.

Excellent tutorial and fun to watch, January 21, 2003
This review is from: Doggie Cuts [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This was purchased on a lark when I wanted to groom my Maltese to save money on expensive grooming salons. The step by step instructions are easy to follow in a conversational manner which is easy to listen to and the animals are the perfect subjects. I learned the basics inside of one intensive afternoon of practice and though I'm not ready to show my pooch at Westminster, I certainly will save a small fortune in grooming fees each year thanks to this tape.
