After a back injury that disabled her, Cheryl organized the recipies she had developed over the years for Kooper and produced this book. It is chock-full of recipies for desserts, made with healthy ingredients, that your dog will adore.
Cake
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup unbleached white flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp all natural molasses
1/4 cup honey
1 egg
1 cup water
1/4 cup freeze-dried liver (available in pet stores)
Frosting
1 8-ounce package low fat cream cheese, softened
2 Tbsp honey
1/3 cup vegetable oil
Optional Decorative Frosting
1 4-ounce package low fat cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup carob powder (available in health food stores)
Directions:
Put freeze-dried liver in blender and blend to form powder. In a large
bowl, mix cake ingredients.
Pour batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square cake pan.
Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes.
Cake is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool cake on a wire rack.
Before frosting the cake, you can make a stencil of a dog bone.
Place the stencil on the cake and cut cake to the shape of the dog bone.
Then frost and decorate as desired.
To Prepare Frosting
Mix cream cheese, honey and oil until smooth.
Spread a thin layer of frosting over the cooled cake.
Mix ingredients for decorative frosting until smooth.
Place decorative frosting in a piping bag and decorate cake.

Some recipes are really good (Salmon Balls, Peanut Butter Bites), but others aren't. Some have so much oil in them that the treats are, well, oily.
Some recipes are just a variation on others--substitute turkey for chicken and you have a whole new entry in the book. One recipe--chicken and cheese biscuits--contains NO CHEESE whatsoever. Many recipes contain cornmeal.

Healthy Treats,
This review is from: Doggie Desserts: Delicious Homemade Treats for Happy, Healthy Dogs (Paperback)
Nutritious, yummy snacks for my dog and great gifts for her friends. Ingredients that are on hand in the cupboard. Much less expensive than the dog bakery that's 20 miles from my home.
