PreSchool-Grade 2 - Monsieur Albert's pet store is right next to Mademoiselle Madeleine's clothing shop. Each day, the seamstress rushes past carrying colorful ribbons, buttons, and fabric, oblivious to the fact that Doggie is watching her from the window. He dreams of being adopted by Mademoiselle, but she never notices him. One night, Doggie peeks through a hole in the wall between the two establishments and sees her at work. After she leaves, he sneaks into her shop and is enchanted by the colorful materials that surround him. He comes up with a plan to grab her attention and works all night to sew a zebra-print kitten costume. The next morning, Mademoiselle Madeleine sees him in the window, and, over the next several days, takes note as Doggie models a fish costume, a bird costume, and even a lizard costume. When she finds out that he has created each ensemble, she is so impressed that she hires him as her designer. The two-dimensional, stylized, gouache-and-ink illustrations are colorful and cheerful, but the story about following one's dreams is a little forced. Doggie's extra-canine abilities in sewing and costume design just don't ring true.
