Book Description

0978562216 978-0978562212 June 6, 2006
Rhode Island can be a great place to hike with your dog. Within an hour's drive you can hike on sand trails, climb hills that leave your dog panting, walk on some of the most historic grounds in America, explore the estates of America's wealthiest families or circle lakes for miles and never lose sight of the water. I have selected what I consider to be the 25 best places to take your dog for an outing and ranked them according to subjective criteria including the variety of hikes available, opportunities for canine swimming and pleasure of the walks. The rankings include a mix of parks that feature long walks and parks that contain short walks. Did I miss your favorite? Let us know at www.hikewithyourdog.com.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea for a book, but poor execution, February 9, 2011

This is a good idea for a book, and has some good information. However, this book has a lot of flaws:

The printing quality is really terrible. The pages look like they were printed off a laserprinter. Some of the illustrations are bitmapped to pieces and look like the files were sent to the printer with missing art (p. 35, 42). The photos look terrible. In this day of Lulu and Blurb self-printing, there is no excuse for this shoddy quality.

There's no index of hikes at the front of the book; you have to flip through the entire book just to know what the hikes are.

There is no overall state map to give you a quick idea where the different walks are located; you have to either have a map in front of you, or some understanding of RI geography to know where they are.

None of the hikes include a map of any sort. Is the walk a loop? Does it go near water? Read the text to find out.

There's no GPS coordinates of any kind.

There's no kind of "at-a-glance" indicator of hike characteristics, as many hiking guides have, at the start of each hike; the information is there, but you have to read the text.

Several of the 25 walks are all-day affairs, including ferry trips (Prudence Island; Block Island), not really (for me, anyway) the kind of thing I'm going to do for a quick dog-walk. I'd rather have a more comprehensive list of more small places that I'm likely to take my dog, rather than big all-day trips. Include more small neighborhood parks, not so much emphasis on big state parks that I'm likely to know about anyhow.

The author would do well to hire a real designer and put together a second edition. Expand it to more hikes, and add features that are routine in other hiking guides, and it might be a worthwhile investment for a dog owner.

I bought this for a gift but it does look like it has interesting info on the areas. I think it will be handy for the person I gave it to.
