More About the Author

I was born in the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts. The best friends of my childhood were pointers named Stuffy and Nonny. I had imaginary companions as well: a cat named Thirsty Melirsty Medrinkable, a family of dogs, and parents called Mommy and Daddy Suh. Thirsty and the dog family slowly faded away. The Suhs, however, perished suddenly; they ate fish guts and died. My career as a mystery writer thus began in early childhood: I invented animals, and I killed off fictional human beings.

Now, many decades later, I live just outside Boston. My husband is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in Cambridge. Our daughter, Jessica, who is also my coauthor, lives in New Hampshire with her husband and their young son. My husband and I have an Alaskan malamute, Django (pronounced 'Jango') and two Chartreux cats, Kansas City (K.C.) and Shadow Celeste. The malamutes in my Holly Winter books are composites, but the cats in Scratch the Surface, Edith and Brigitte, are portraits of my own Chartreux.

Holly Winter returns in the 2nd book in the Dog Lover's Mysteries. Holly writes articles for A Dog's Life, trains at the local obedience club, shows her dog in obedience, and works to find the dognappers of her dog and her father's wolf. Her Malamute, Rowdy, plays a starring role in this book that takes a strong look at testing on animals.

I was not the same after reading this book. I have to admit that after reading it, I started looking more closely at the labels on packaging that say "Not Tested on Animals". This was not a preachy book, but brought to light some shocking things done to animals at some testing facilities. I consider myself an animal lover and was haunted by this book after reading it. Not exactly a lighthearted read, but it was worth it.

The first book in this series is "A New Leash on Death". Enjoy!

I had a little difficulty getting this book, but I'm glad that I did finally find it. It is a wonderful mystery, even though the subject behind the mystery is disturbing. I know that I knew about research done on live animals, but I never thought about with dogs somehow. I pictured lab rats and mice. It goes against everything that I believe in to use our domestic best friends for product testing and experiments. But the mystery was good, and I enjoyed Holly and her friends again. Ms. Conant knows how to write a story while she bravely uncovers some less than desirable facts about big business. This is a wonderful series for dog lovers, or for any animal lovers if it comes to that.

It's so hard to find good dog books, and I did have hopes for this series. But bamboo under my fingernails couldn't make me read more. The author uses the pretext of a story (with a flimsy plot at that) to preach at her audience about animal issues. And while some of these issues have validity, a work of fiction is not the place for them. Completely turned me off her books. Not to mention the snobby pure-bred elitism common in books about dog shows, etc. No, gimme a good ole mutt any day. This book was all-around horrible. I think I only finished it so I'd be good and riled to write the review, otherwise I might have stopped half-way through. The only good thing I can say about this book is that at least it was short.
