Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Legs, big and small, and an under-the-table smorgasbord of food and scattered household items make up the world of the nameless dog in this darling offering from Helakoski. This canine’s household was once a whole lot less chaotic, but her human family just keeps on growing. She accommodates each addition skeptically in rhyming, tongue-twisting verse, counting the newcomers in twos according to the feet added to her underworld, but as long as food keeps hitting the floor, it works out. Pictures in bright blues and yellows emphasize curves in a way that mimics the rollicking narrative and showcases the floor-level viewpoint. Only at the end, when some newborn puppy additions to the family appear, do we see the faces associated with Legs, Toes, Socks, Boots, Slippers, and Shoes (as our heroine refers to them). The finale sums up: “So under the table, / feet scooch on the floor / ’cause families always . . . / yes, always . . . / make room for more!” Same goes for bookshelves filled with doggie picture books, right? Preschool-Grade 2. --Karen Cruze

I have been a preschool teacher since 1978... so I've ready a LOT of books over the years! There are some classics, some treasures, some books that aren't available any more because they are out of print... and an awful lot of what I consider pure garbage published in the name of "children's fiction". So I was skeptical when I brought my granddaughter to the library story hour, where the author was reading this book aloud. I was pleasantly surprised! This book was wonderful! It was precious! It was adorable! And my granddaughter enjoyed it, too! I promptly bought a copy for her - and almost bought one for myself, as well. My only regret is that I didn't grab the author to sign it before she left!

I know dogs. I love dogs. When I'm not teaching preschool, I'm running sled dogs! The author did a great job of capturing "dog" in her story, as well as capturing the interest of the 150 children in the crowded library. Any book that can do that, deserves more than five stars. If you add this one to your child's library, you will not regret it. It is short, so it's easy to read on those nights when you just aren't up to a longer bedtime story. And your child is sure to want to hear it again and again. I think I will go buy another copy, to keep at grandma's house!

Why kids will love it - Reading about each new set of feet will have kids guessing who they might belong to. Since the faces that go along with the feet aren't shown until the end of the book, kids can imagine the faces until the end. The surprise at the end of the book is very fun and definitely a total surprise! The illustrations are cheery and so kid-friendly, there's so much to look at and enjoy.

What I learned as a writer - Picture books are so dependent on the text and illustrations to have a give and take with each other. This book is a perfect example of needing both. Leslie does a fantastic job of meshing the two together. The repetition she uses to carry the story along is simple, but so fun to read.

This is such a fun book to read aloud, I hope you will all check it out!

I had the pleasure of hearing and watching Leslie read this book to the kindergarten students at St. Joseph Elementary School in Battle Creek, Michigan. They loved Leslie. Not only is Leslie an excellent author for young children, she does wonderful presentations for them.
