5.0 out of 5 stars Original Work of ART
I bought this CD in 1993 when the original version came out. It had 19 tracks, not 18 or 13. The real track 18 is "Gz Up, Hoes Down" and Track 19 is "Pump, Pump." I didn't even realize that later releases had tracks removed until I started looking for the album art for my iPod.

1.0 out of 5 stars I feel cheated
Don't get me wrong, I love this CD for the most part, but when they remastered the CD they left my absolute favorite track off. Most of you who've bought the CD probably notice that it ends at track 18 with a track called "Pump Pump." However, I dubbed the tape off of the original CD when it first came out (my older brother has a copy) and there are two differences. 1.)...

This album is a classic. if you want to buy it try to get the original with NINETEEN TRACKS. Don't allow yourself to miss Snoop in his full artistic form. This is definitely one of the Top Ten CD of All Time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Dre and Snoop's best project... period., February 2, 2000
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
This album is better than "The Chronic." There is no doubt about it. While "The Chronic" was without a doubt a hip-hop classic and a landmark album in g-funk (which Dre basically invented), "Doggystyle" is the result of both Dre refining his sound and Snoop refining his rhyme. It's a beautiful thing... This album is filled with laid-back grooves ("Lodi Dodi") and out-and-out party anthems ("What's My Name?," "Ain't No Fun") alongside horror-filled urban narratives ("Murder Was the Case," "Serial Killa"). It's the perfect balance of gangsta, playa and pimp all rolled into a fat blunt for all to smoke on. Sure, it was graphic... sure, it was violent... sure, it probably offended the majority of people who listened to it... but it sure was fun, wasn't it? Get this album... if you're a real hip-hop head, this deserves to be in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snoop in his prime!!!!!!!!!, April 14, 2004

This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
Snoop Dogg reigned supreme in 93 with this CLASSIC. Snoop was perhaps one of the coolest rappers to emerge from the west during this time, and when he dropped this album, he took the east AND the west by storm. And what resulted was his ABSOLUTE BEST album to this very day. Here's the review:

Album Highlights: The ENTIRE album, EVERY song here literally is a classic.

Production: Thumbs up, laced with the supreme skills of Dr.Dre.

Lyrics and Subject Matter: Thumbs up, Snoop doesn't rhyme like this today.

Originality: Thumbs up.

The Last Word: It's a shame that we don't have THIS Snoop today. But in 93, he was on top of the world, on top of his game, and TRULY in his prime. He didn't peak until he went to the corny No Limit Records in an attempt to resurrect his career. But with Doggystyle, he forged an unforgettable classic, up there with the likes of Dre's The Chronic. Another STRONG recommendation for this album. You won't regret buying this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars let the DOGG take over your mind, August 27, 2003
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
There are no words that can describe how PERFECT this album is. If you like 'The Chronic' by Dr. Dre, you'll absolutely adore this album. It has everything you need and everything you ever wanted. This is without a doubt one of the best G Funk albums ever created. This compared to 'G Funk Era' and 'The Chronic', it's impossible to say which one is the best. If you're one of those people who dislike this album, something must be wrong with you because this has easily entered Rap's Hall of Fame.

Produced by Dr. Dre, this has mind-blowing and ear-splitting beats I've ever heard in the G Funk genre. Outstanding songs to be heard on this album are: What's my Name, Gin n Juice, Tha Shiznit, Murder was the Case, Doggy Dogg World and Ain't No Fun (which is my favorite song on this album. Expect guest appearances from Dogg Pound, Dre, RBX, Lady of Rage, Warren G (basically the whole Death Row crew except for 2pac).

Out of every rap album Snoop has released, this is the best by a long shot. I wanna give props to Snoop for creating such a perfect album. This is perfect in all sorts of way and to those who don't respect Snoop, F*CK YOU.

One love
-JK Dog

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is what got gangsta rap main stream, July 18, 2005
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
This is the album that really kicked gangsta rap into the main stream. Dr. Dre came along and had tons of success with The Chronic but honestly I think a lot of people thought it was a fluke. When Snoop Dogg released 'Doggstyle' it did 2 things. First, it proved that Dr. Dre is no fluke, period. Second, it showed that rap mixed with RnB can be not only radio friendly but great to listen to. My personal favorite is 'Murder was the Case' although Gin and Juice got much more air play. Unfortunately none of Snoop's albums since has been at this level but that's really not a knock against him, when you put out a great album it's all but impossible to duplicate it. The only reason I don't listen to this album more is the language and lyrical content (it isn't fit, in my opinion, for my 2 year old to hear) When I do get a chance to listen to it, however, it sounds just as fresh as when it was first released over 10 years ago - give it a listen and pick up a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Top Rap Albums Ever!, March 30, 2003
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
Every track on this CD is good. There is not ONE bad track to speak of, and that's a huge accomplishment by itself. This is the perfect complement to The Chronic. Both albums define the very nature of what G-Funk and rap are all about. It's produced by Dr. Dre, and his influence is seen in every track through incredibly irrestible beats (a la The Chronic). This CD has some of the best beats ever heard on a rap album, combined with incredible lyrics and Snoop's best style. Guest appearances from The Dogg Pound rappers are excellent, and this is by far Snoop's best rapping.

This CD CANNOT be compared to any other Snoop Dogg CD; it surpasses any of his other albums with ease. There are so many classics on this album ("Gin and Juice," "Murder Was the Case," "Ain't No Fun," "Tha Shiznit," etc.) and the others, though less played, are equally as good. If you liked The Chronic (in other words, if you like real rap with incredible beats and lyrics) then buy this album. It will not disappoint. This goes along perfectly with The Chronic and many debate which album is better. Either way, you cannot lose with this album: It is easily one of the best rap albums EVER.

5.0 out of 5 stars Passionate and enchanting; a true hip-hop classic., October 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
An excellent look at the artistic integrity of hip-hop, young Snoop Doggy Dogg won the hearts of many with this truly beautiful debut album. Always cool with a touch of jazz swing, this album touches even the deepest reaches of the soul with its enchanting sounds and Snoop's clever lyrics and undeniably entertaining drawl. Every single aspect of the album is amazing; as passionate as the moon in a dark forest night. Doggystyle sounds as smooth as the flowing through a pond. In this current day and age of hip-hop, there rarely is anything as fun and innovative as this. Snoop Doggy Dogg definitely out-did himself on this album, and with help from his friend Dr. Dre (who produced every single track, but was not featured on any), Doggystyle can certainly be called a gem.

The highlights on this album include the lively "G-Funk Introduction", which features a running bass line and a verse from the crazy Lady Of Rage, "Gin and Juice", one of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time, laced by Dr. Dre's signature high-pitched keyboard trills and funky guitar. The best part of the song, though, is signature Snoop, as he turns in the performance of a lifetime. Another amazingly well-done track is "The Shiznit", which has a flute-looped chorus and one of Snoop's greatest performances on the album, as he spits mind-boggling rhymes, Snoop's razor-sharp remake of Slick Rick's old school hip-hop classic, "Lodi Dodi", another amazing performance from Snoop, and sultry background vocals from Nancy Fletcher, the famous "Murder Was The Case", which is a tale told by Snoop reminiscent of Arabian Nights legends. The fast-paced song "Serial Killer", which features Kurupt, Daz, The D.O.C., and RBX, for an interesting jam, the classic "Who Am I (What's My Name?)", with a beat signed by Dr. Dre, and one of Snoop's better rap solos. I found it hard to believe that no one here had mentioned the piano-laced "For All", which features partners Kurupt, Daz, and Lady Of Rage, one of the better tracks (even though Snoop lays out). The very best track is "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)", which features Nate Dogg, Kurupt, and Warren G. It has some of the best production I've ever heard, and is the song Mariah Carey sampled for her "Heartbreaker (Remix)". Other highlights include the gently bouncing "Doggy Dogg World", which features Daz, Kurupt, and The Dramatics (a famous soul group). It is laced by an acoustic piano and a flute, the piano-laced "Gs and Hustlas", one of the better tracks, and the head bobbing "Pump Pump", which definitely bounces, and features Lil' Malik. Those were all the tracks, and they were all excellent. Even "Bathtub", the introduction to the album, had passion and meaning.

To conclude my review, Snoop Doggy Dogg's Doggystyle is a hip-hop classic. I enjoyed every aspect of the album. It's pretty obvious why Snoop's other albums weren't as good as this one, and that's because he didn't work with Dr. Dre as much. Snoop's later music is still good, with the exception of The Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told, but he needs to get back with Dre to repeat the greatness of this. Always and forever, Snoop Doggy Dogg's first album will be a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars helen is a moron., December 13, 2005

Kraze (Kansas City, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
This album is one of the first rap CDs that I had ever heard. My brother bought it when it first came out, and boy am I glad he exposed me to it. Snoop pioneered the way for the G-Funk style of rap, and it produced such artists as Warren G and Kurupt. Classics like Gin and Juice, Who Am I, and Murder Was the Case give this album its popularity, while tracks like Gz and Hustlas, Aint No Fun, and Lodi Dodi keep the album give the album great beats.

I had to write this review because I read the review of this "Helen" character. Obviously, since she gave every song on the album a 1/5 or less, I had to check out her other reviews. I noticed that she said that Nelly, in his latest two albums (Sweat and Suit), was "The greatest hip-hop i've ever heard, i'm truthfully amazed. This is an extraordinary effort by the realest hip-hop artist yet. He has got the sweetest voice i've ever heard, snoopy dogg and the genius is nothing in comparision to this guy, this album shows what real hip-hop is all about, i guess."

Hmm. I "guess" that you are a total moron. Don't post whether or not you think someone is a real hip-hop artist if you are a 12 year old girl with no brain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A MUST Buy!!!!, March 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Doggystyle (Audio CD)
This CD was the second ever to be released on Death Row Records following Dr. Dre's incredibly successful, The Chronic. In this album, Dre defines the G-Funk style even more, creating a sequel to his original album with his protege Snoop Doggy Dogg. This album has all the characteristics of classic G-Funk with the thick, deep, relaxed bass line, high-end keyboard riffs, Eddie Hazel-ish guitar riffs, background vocals, a horn section every couple of songs, interesting looping of instruments like flutes and some weird sound effects for background effects. This style of music is a la George Clinton and Parliment-Funkadelic, Dre's idols during the 70s. Besides the completely funked-out beats, the flow of Snoop is his best ever and is complemented by the guest artists. This is the ultimate album where all songs are fresh and innovative and capture the ears. The songs just make you want to cruise in your lowrider and pump this as loud as possible.

02- G Funk Intro- A great track featuring the Lady of Rage who drops a tight verse. I swear there are George Clinton samples in this song but I can't be sure. This song is a prequel to the greatness of the rest of the song. It lives up to its name.

03- Gin & Juice- Another great bassline with excellent lyrics by Snoop and a catchy chorus with Dat Nigga Daz. One of the stand out tracks of the CD

05- Tha Shiznit- This song shows Snoop at his lyrical best with an interesting flute/recorder loop provided by Dre.

07- Lodi Dodi- A remake of Slick Rick's hip-hop classic feat. Nancy Fletcher carrying the background vocals.

08- Murder Was The Case- A song about a murder in the inner city where Snoop speaks his mind and concerns. A ghetto anthem.

09- Serial Killa- An awesome song showing the talents of other rappers Kurupt & Dat Nigga Daz (DPG), RBX and The D.O.C. some of the greatest lyrical talent is displayed on this track. It is a shame that the D.O.C.'s vocal cords were smashed in a car crash cause he is an unbelievable lyricist, one of the greatest. Pick up his album.

10- Who Am I?- The signature track of the album with Dre at the boards and Snoop rapping. Excellent with an intoxicating beat that is classic "funk".

11- For All My Niggaz And Bitches- This shows the potential that Death Row had in the early 90s. The Lady of Rage and Tha Dogg Pound ripped this track up and porved themselves as real mcs.

12- Aint No Fun- Another great song on this excellent CD. The chorus by Nate Dogg is awesome, backed by a true funk beat, sampled by many artists. Kurupt, Snoop and Warren G trade verses that are downright tight and sweet. The 213 song feat. Kurupt and Dre at the boards is awesome.

13- Doggy Dogg World- This song is laid back and completely funked out with the background carried by the Dramatics, a soul group. Snoop, Kurupt and Daz, the DPG, kill this track with lyrical assults that are downright crazy. Winner of the Best Music Video in '93.

Un-named tracks- They are all great and show lyrical talent and production skills of Snoop and Dre. Listen to this tracks and you might recognize some hooks and lyrics that newer artists are using ex: Eminem.

Unreleased tracks- There were two tracks that should have been part of this CD but were cut, The Next Episode (Original) feat. Dr. Dre on the mic along with Snoop to a completely dope beat. Unfortuantely it never made the final cut. The other song was called Doggystyle feat. the funk-master himself, George Clinton. The beat is completely out-of-this-world with the classic thick bassline, a backup vocal group that sounds like the Brides of Funkenstein, distorted guitar, and a horn section. Snoop is awesome on this track that is produced by Dr. Dre and Warren G. Too bad it never made the final version.

In conclusion, this album is a classic and should be owned by everybody that enjoys west coast rap. If one could get by the explicit lyrics about pimping, sex, guns and 187s, drugs specifically chronic weed and the cursing, one might be able to recognize the skills Dr. Dre has at the boards and Snoop's lyrical talent. Buy it, an great CD 5/5.
