Solid flick, amazing soundtrack.,

See the subject line? That's my review, in its entirety. We were very lucky to have Howard Shore working with us.Mostly I'm writing to answer the many (is three "many"?) requests for the Mooby lyrics. Here ya go. Thanks for digging the movie enough to seek out the CD. Kev p.s. I just saw the preview of how this post will look--the rough cut, if you will--and the lyric lines aren't formatted properly. Each verse is written out like a sentence. I'm sure you'll live, though. Bye again.
Who's a friend to the King of all the monkeys? Who's a pal to the duck who won't fly south? Who's the buddy of the Bible Quoting Aardvark? Who's the chum of the cat inside your mouth? He is a cow! It's Mooby Cow! Oh sweet Bovine, our lives to you we vow! We want him now! That Mooby Cow! 'Cause we're all soldiers in the Mooby Troops, Ka-Pow! Oh we'll all have some loverly adventures With Surly and the Pat-Pat Monkey King! And with Enoch and Little Eddie Dentures! We'll put smiles on the grumpies as we sing! About that cow! Mooby the Cow! Who only moos when we beg and scream and shout! Master of Tao! Mooby the Cow! With only sacred enlightenedness allowed!

Great but not perfect...,

As far as film scores go this is neither the best nor is it the worst either. What you have here is Howard Shore giving a Kevin Smith movie an epic feel. The music is very good and lends even more credibility to Smiths already wonderful film. It is very worthwile for Score fans. The main attraction here tho is Alanis Morrisettes "Still". Here she is in top form as she sings as the Almighty who she plays in the film. Alanis does not dissappoint here and gives one of her best performances vocally. Those of you looking for another collection of guitar heavy alternative tracks like the previous Smith Soundtracks should look elsewhere. Are you looking for a quality film score? Buy this. Are you a fan of Alanis? Buy this. Do you want a movie soundtrack full of diverse bands and music? Skip this... Dogma is a great CD, just be sure you know what youre getting.

Alanis Morissette is God... enough said!,

Still is one of the best songs Alanis has written for a long time. It's a perfect preview of what we can expect on her next studio album, or a perfect follow-up to the revelations of her last one, depending on which you prefer. Still by Alanis Morissette alone is worth buying the album, although the rest of the album, the instrumentals is just as fantastic, in an instrumental-ish kind of way. Go buy it!

I hate Alanis, but I LOVED this!,

Although I cannot stand Alanis Morissette, I actually liked her song "Still." What saves the song are the lyrics and the awesome background music, featuring an electric sitar to create a sort of mystical, Middle-Eastern atmosphere. As for the rest of the CD, it's traditional but terrific classical. Several of the pieces sound like music you'd hear in a gothic cathedral, complete with a wonderful vocals by a choir. Others are lighter and more beautiful, like "The Last Scion," the end of "John Doe Jersey," and "A Very Relieved Diety." The only clunker on this CD music-wise is obviously "Mooby the Golden Calf," which you'll wrack your brains over trying to figure out the lyrics. However, it's great for a good laugh. What it all comes down to is that "Dogma" is a superb movie plot- and content-wise with a great CD! Get this if you love classical music and/or Alanis. That, or if you love hearing children's choirs on drugs singing a song with lyrics on drugs.

Devilishly bad...,

The world may divide into two kinds of people. Those who like Alanis, and others who dislike her voice and choice of songs. Being one of the unlucky second group, I found this CD apalling. I follow on that the funny Amazon review by "solidoak".
I understand Howard Shore has made great soundtracks remembered by all, but even soloists from the London Phil. can't make a corny score sound well. "Mooby", track 2 is particularly obnoxious. Don't get me wrong, I do like religious music, Fauré and Mozart's requiems, etc; I just don't like this pretence of the same genre. As "a customer" wrote: "if you love hearing children's choirs on drugs singing a song with lyrics on drugs". The CD itself is nice, the design on the disc, I mean. Track 6's "ondes Martenot" (I suppose it's an instrument) is of some interest. All in all I agree with Khaled Milad (Geneva)'s review: "if you are a Morissette fan then this soundtrack will defintely please you and if you are not it may not be the wisest choice".

Alanis wows w/ her most brilliant contribution to music ye,

I am an 18 year old male and have always adored Alanis Morissette, but this song makes my adoration so great as to be true love. I truly believe that she is the greatest singer/songwriter of my generation. This song is a brilliant piece of music which dares to ask questions of God rarely posed before in a song. This is no "What if God Was One of Us" rip-off. The ideas on this track are much deeper and more meaningful. The track is called "Still". Alanis sings as God, looking down at the people of Earth, realizing that despite all the sins humans commit and all the evil they do to other people and the earth itself, God will still forgive them their short-comings. Like a parent talking to children, the love does not stop just because the children are disobedient. The parents may be upset or scolding but they will always love their children. A beautiful song, a beautiful message, and beautiful lyrics. The greatest is a direct reference to the President of the United States: "I see you lie to your country, I see you pushing them out." "I see you with your selective amnesia, but I love you still...I love you still." Poetic and beautiful. A must-have song.

It's all about Alanis,
By Jack Xiong (De Moin, IA USA) - See all my reviews

I was already dismissing Alanis as just an OK singer, but when I rented "Dogma" and then heard her song "Still" at the end credits, I was shocked to hear such a mature song written by Alanis. It has a great message and just a beautiful sound. It truly is her most mature and one of her best, up to the standards of her two studio albums. If she can keep up with the great standard of "Still" on her next album, maybe all the people who accuse her of being a poseur will change their minds.

After seeing the movie I made the descision to purchase the soundtrack based on the great musical score. I am quite glad that I did, the instrumentals are great. The only track I did not enjoy was "Still" by Alanis Morissette. It seems "Ironic" that the same person who was able to mar the ending of the movie, also managed to corrupt the soundtrack. If you enjoy incidental music and you can ignore the blemish of a single track; buy this album.

Alanis Morissette has proven to be an artist full of exploration (finally an artist who could care less about sales). "Still" is a masterpiece, both lyrically and musically. The lyrics are about Alanis' views on god and they are very deep and introspective. As for her voice, beautiful! Alanis does an awesome chant thing in the song that takes my breath away. The rest of the cd is great and Howard Shore did wonders in creating music for "Dogma".
