5.0 out of 5 stars A classic!, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Dogmatix and the Magic Potions (Paperback)
This is a classic graphic novel of the Asterix and Obelix series by Goscinny and Uderzo. It reads more like a picture book than a comic, with paragraphs of text alongside related pictures.

I won't tell you the story, but thoroughly recommend it as a valuable addition to any young person's collection. Books like this encourage young people to read. The value of graphic novels and comics in this process should not be underestimated by parents and educators. It took me back to my own Asterix book days when I was a teenager.

There are two pages with relatively realistically drawn pictures of flora and fauna that feature in the story. These are a welcome addition, which are well placed and add depth to the story-line.

Once or twice I felt that the translation into English was a little awkward. For example, "water" is used instead of "saliva". Unless, of course, it was a pun or wordplay (which this book is replete with) that I missed.

It seems that the Dogmatix books such as this are out of print and are fast becoming collectors' items. This is great for the collectors (and their suppliers!), but not so great for the young people who would benefit from this magnificent read. It deserves a reprint!

5.0 out of 5 stars How do you solve the problem of an avaricious eagle?, October 14, 2007

This review is from: Dogmatix and the Magic Potions (Paperback)
A great graphic children's book, based on characters from the Asterix series. Part of a series featuring Obelix's pet dog Dogmatix, and a host of his friends in the village and the forest such as Chickadix, Mrs Twit, Cockix, and Crocus.
Aquila the Imperial Eagle has driven the entire animal life into refuge in a nearby cave, with his voracious appetite, and is growing grossly overweight.
His son Chickadix enlists the help of his friend Dogmatix to save his father and at the same time it is in the interests of everyone to save all the creatures of the countryside.
Getafix comes up with three magic potions which hopefully save the day.

Charming and imformative spreads about various flora and fauna make this book more interesting and add great educational value.
Really great for kids aged six to ten.
