A fun book filled with valuable insights for life,

I LOVED Dogology! Nearly every page made me laugh or cry and wonder if Sarah and Vicki had somehow been watching me with my dogs for years. These authors know dogs, and just as importantly, they know people and what makes them tick. They also write in an engaging and entertaining style while delivering significant insights.
As a dog trainer, I find this book a helpful read for understanding the various mindsets and personalities that I encounter in my work. I'm also sure the write-ups about the different personality types will help me with my relationships in other spheres of my life, as it discusses people and what lies behind some of their choices. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a dog or anyone who wants to understand their dog-loving friends or relatives.

Dogology: What Your Relationship with Your Dog Reveals about You
Just got my copy and I'm having trouble putting it down! This is a great read for anyone with a dog, getting a dog, knows someone with a dog, or is looking for a wonderful Christmas present for all those on their list with a dog or two. Holiday shopping will never get any easier than this. Whether you're a *read a little - put it down - read a little more* reader, or a *devour it all at once* reader like I am, this book is a fun read with deep insight into people and their dogs. You're learning about you, about your dog, and about your human/canine relationship, all while having fun. This is a must-have on my bookshelf.

The expression "it takes two to tango" comes to mind when thinking about what Dogology offers us. Often, as dog owners, we wonder why our dog does something -- what is it about the dog that causes the behavior. Sometimes it is just about the dog. But, more often, your dog's behavior is connected to the relationship between you and your dog. It takes two to tango, so it is important that we look at both sides of the relationship, or both ends of the leash.
Dogology explores the nature of our relationships with our dogs and what we can learn about ourselves by examining those relationships. The book first describes nine different types of dog owners. Through quick, fun quizzes we can find our type and learn more about ourselves. In addition to offering descriptions of each type of dog owner, the authors offer suggestions for character building exercises for each type, to help them grow as people and as dog owners. Dogology also offers a beautiful, easy to understand look at the different breeds of dogs. Rather than the usual information you find in books which say they can find the right breed for you -- does it shed, how much exercise does it need, how big does it get -- Dogology offers descriptions of the common personality traits of the different breeds. This approach, combined with the personality assessment at the beginning of the book, really allows readers to make an informed decision about what kind of dog they would be well-suited for and visa versa. In addition to providing a wealth of wonderful information, Dogology is well-written with a healthy mix of no-nonsense talk and well-placed humor. It is a fun read. Personally, there were many laughs and a couple of occasions for a tissue. I highly recommend Dogoloy to all dog lovers, people trying to understand dog lovers, and anyone considering adding a dog to their home.

Turns out I'm equal parts Expert, Soul Mate, Buddy, and Observer. Guess I need to read the whole book! I also found the section on how we talk to our dogs really interesting. I never really paid much attention before. Actually, there is quite a bit things in this book that will have me paying attention to things I never did before.
This book will really have you thinking about your relationship with your dog. It would also be wonderful for someone looking to acquire a dog....will point you in the right direction in terms of selecting a breed that would work for your personality and life style.

My copy arrived and I decided to just page through a little since I was short on time and wanted to really enjoy it. An hour later, I was hooked. There is a LOT of truth in this good natured look at our relationships with our dogs. My favorite part details how our human qualities match (or clash with!) our dogs'. I laughed out loud when I read the characteristics of my spaniel and they also suited me to a T! I'll be stocking up on Dogology for Christmas presents for all of the dog-people I know. They can't borrow mine! This is a keeper.

Fun Exploration of the Ways We Love Our Dogs,

Got my copy yesterday and I've already finished it. I love Dogology because it's all about US, the humans, unlike the rest of my dog books which are all about, well, dogs. What a fun way to think about human-dogger relationships.
The square format is really handsome, easy to hold, and classy. It's lighthearted, tongue in check and fun--perfect for any dog lover. You can dip in at any page and enjoy just one section. LOL funny....in the Soul Mate section, under Character Building Exercises (very lighthearted).... "Stop calling your adult dog a puppy for one month." Yeah, right. Puppy puppy puppy! LOVE the "Dog Talk" essay which describes how we talk to our dogs in doggerel, or pet-ese, and how it relates to baby talk. Both languages--"motherese" and "doggerel"--help us bond with the ones we love.

This book is thoughtful, informative, and substantive. I loved the short quizzes that revealed your Dogology type--which was very accurate for me. [...]
If you are a dog lover, get it. If you know someone who has a dog, get it for them. It's illuminating stuff.

Did you ever notice how a dog seems to reflect the personality of its owner? Some folks wonder if such an occurrence could be pure coincidence or perhaps a product of some unconscious element of natural selection. The authors of DOGOLOGY have playfully determined that a person's choice of dog and subsequent relationship speaks volumes about their own personality.
Vicki Croke and Sarah Wilson, the writers and self-proclaimed Dogologists, have created a "foolproof self-analyzing system" that helps slot a person into a particular Dogology Type. Through this process, a person learns more about their own personality and what makes them tick. With that, they are better able to recognize which dog breed may be best suited as a lifelong companion. Although the book seems written with a slight bend toward women, both sexes will enjoy learning where they fit into the various personality types. Folks contemplating dog ownership will especially find the book beneficial. Choosing the right pooch may become a lot easier once they know how and why their personality fits with a certain breed. The best lifelong companion could be just around the next page. Dogology is a worldly, playful, and laid back read. Most readers should find it insightful and reassuring. |
