Book Description

April 12, 2011
Meet the four-legged friends who frolic, walk, and romp in New York City’s biggest playground. Move over Westminster! There’s a live canine show happening in Central Park seven days a week, 365 days a year. On top of the 25 million people who visit New York’s iconic park each year are those with an extra two legs who utilize the 800-plus acres, be it to soak in the sun, fraternize with fellow canines, or promenade along the walkways with their well-heeled owners. Big dogs. Little dogs. Multibreeds. Photographer Fran Reisner captures all these playful creatures throughout the seasons in their furry splendor as they delight in the natural wonders of New York’s biggest green lawn. There’s snow-loving Lenny, an elderly Golden Retriever who was born in Austria and has traveled the world with his owners, an opera singer and his wife. Charley is a Standard Poodle and a certified "Delta Dog," doing volunteer therapy at Mt. Sinai Hospital. And there’s Daisy—a mixed breed with piercing blue eyes who hails from the Bronx and to whom Roberta Flack once stopped and sang "Daisy Daisy"—exudes cool as she relaxes on a bench. Calmly mugging for the camera, displaying panache and flair as they pose in front of Bethesda Fountain or Belvedere Castle, these urban sophisticates are all adorable prancers who make it clear that New York City is their turf. Whimsical, humorous, and genuinely endearing, The Dogs of Central Park is a unique love letter to dogs and to New York, and is a wonderful souvenir for tourists and dog lovers alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"In the book, dogs are just everywhere in the park, as they are in life - lounging on the 'Imagine' mosaic in Strawberry Fields, posing in front of the Dairy, communing at Bethesda Fountain and, of course, paying homage to the sculpture of the noble Balto." ~New York Daily News

""The Dogs Of Central Park" will delight dog lovers all over the world, and if you don't experience a few oohs and aahs over some of the terrific shots in this book you are heartless (or maybe a cat lover!)." ~Hamptons.com

"For the reader, the focus is animated and engaging. For anyone who has visited Central Park with a dog, this vibrant portrait represents a memorable mix of passion, panache and play." ~Seattle Kennel Club

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY IRRESISTIBLE May 15, 2011
Format:Hardcover
This captivating volume has been called "a photographic love letter to dogs, their humans, and to Central Park." It is that and more - it's a collection of 140 color photos that will make you smile and capture your heart. I find myself returning to it again and again, always buoyed by the joy, innocence, and beauty reflected in the portraits of these canines. It is as if each picture is telling a story of a special time and day in their lives.

Internationally acclaimed photographer Fran Reisner must love her subjects for it shows in each photo whether she catches them on The Mall during summer or standing guard at The Boathouse or trotting a snowy path. She found them in all kinds of weather, even rain when she found Obie, a Boxer-Pointer mix who was rescued in Georgia and adopted. As she writes, "When I saw him Obie was soaking wet and having the time of his life, greeting every dog or human who happened by." He's pictured by "The Duke of West Sixty-Ninth Street," a devilishly handsome Weimaraner who "enjoys long walks in the park, romantic comedies, and curling up on the couch with a fresh bone."

There are dogs of every size and kind, cuddly, statuesque, from mixed breed rescue dogs to retired Blue Ribbon winners. As pictured by Reisner they all love and delight in Central Park - it's where they romp, play, socialize or simply stroll. As parks commissioner Adrian Benepe notes in the Preface, "In the heart of Manhattan, it takes a dog to understand the beauty of autumn leaves, the thrill of new fallen snow, and the promise of flowers on a rainy spring day."

THE DOGS OF CENTRAL PARK is a beauty of a book!
