Book Description

2 and up
At last, here is a concept book with a sense of humor and a satisfying story.

Poor Dog. Somehow he always manages to be underfoot when someone makes a mess. Red jam, blue paint, pink ice cream, orange juice-the history of his day is splattered on his bright, white coat. And by evening, there are ten colorful spots for children to count before the careless canine must have his bath.

This fresh and funny introduction to colors and numbers, illustrated by the talented young artist Emma Dodd, makes learning as breezy as a walk in the park with Dog, a pooch with poor personal hygiene but a great deal of charm.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The hero of this pleasant concept book is a plump sausage of a canine: "As you can see, Dog is white with one black spot on his left ear." But by the end of the day, he has turned into a veritable canvas of 10 colorful spots, nine of which have nothing to do with genetics. "Dog follows a little boy with chocolate," writes Dodd (What Does It Look Like?), after Dog has accumulated three other spots of, respectively, red jam, blue paint and grass stain. "The boy gives Dog a chocolaty pat--but no chocolate. Now Dog has five spots." After a recap of all the pooch's spots, and a bath by Dog's owner (who accidentally added the 10th spot of purple marker), Dog returns to his natural look, with that one original spot, cuddled contentedly in his basket and dreaming of multicolored bones. Dog's zaftig physique and wide-eyed good humor are doggone charming, while the combinations of thick, scraggly black outlines and dense swathes of digitally applied candy-color make every encounter with a new spot pop off the page. Ages 2-5.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-This book pulls together colors, counting, sounds, and the simple adventures of a lovable pup. Dog, who is white with one black spot on his ear, spends the day from breakfast to bedtime getting into mischief and into a variety of cumulative messes. Red jam gives him two additional spots; blue paint, three; green grass, four; and so on, until he is covered with 10 spots of various colors, each of which makes a unique sound as it hits his coat: "swish," "splosh," "splurt." When he is given a bath at last, he is clean and single-spotted, and he crawls into bed to dream of colorful bones. Dodd's full-page cartoon illustrations with computer-assisted hues are vibrant, snappy, and exciting. Placement of text, sound words, and goofy Dog himself on each page is humorous and satisfying. A multifaceted concept book and a charming story to boot.-Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY

This review is from: Dog's Colorful Day:A Messy Story About Colors and Counting (Hardcover)
My boys love to read and this is their current favorite. We can't read it enough and I enjoy it with them. Great for beginning to learn, colors and even some simple nouns like dog, bee and ball. I just bought it as a gift for several friends.

A very cute book for tots -- it teaches colors, counting, and has a very cute dog as a main character. My son (almost 3) loves this book, especially when dog gets a spot of chocolate on his fur. I wish they showed a picture of the book. It's a very simple story, dog starts with one black spot on his otherwise white coat, and throughout the course of his day, he gets additional spots (each a different color) from various encounters, then he goes home and gets a bath (another part that my son loves). So, you can teach your children about colors, counting (you can count the spots) and the importance of taking a bath at the end of the day. I plan to use this book with my students (who have autism) when my son outgrows the book, or I may even get another copy of it. I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers, November 4, 2008
Dog's Colorful Day is a delightful book for ages 3 through 6. It provides very specific learning opportunities in the areas of color and number recognition, as well as beatifully illustrated, fun pictures. At the conclution of the book, the child's visual memory is challanged with a color and number review. I am a preschool teacher and always have fun reading this book to my classes. I can highly recommend it!
