Book Description

As a professional dog trainer and animal behavior specialist, I consult with numerous people who bring in their new dog for the first time. We often end up talking about another dog from before, and frequently the tears begin to roll down their cheeks. Some feel guilty that even the death of a proud parent or loved one was not as traumatic as the loss of that dog.

I had that kind of deep love for my first dog, Erikka. So, I looked for jobs where I could take Erikka with me-ultimately leading me to a career in dog training.

As you come to know Erikka in this true story, you will be able to embrace the gift she left behind as she communicated to me from her deathbed: Dogs Do Go to Heaven!

But the story doesn't end there ...

Humbled during Erikka's passing, pleading to the heavens above, I heard a voice that day. It said, "SHE WILL BE REPLACED WITH SOMETHING MUCH GREATER."

I am sharing intimate details of my personal life so that you can accompany me on my quest to discover what could possibly be "GREATER."

I couldn't keep it to myself. This story is meant to be shared.

About the Author

Karyn Garvin refers to herself as a professional dog trainer and animal behavior specialist. There are only a handful of people in this country today who have been training dogs professionally for as long as Karyn has. Professionally being the key word here. This has been her livelihood, working at it six days per week for over 33 years. She was a professional dog trainer before it was really even known as, or considered, a profession. As a young child, she moved with her family from Iowa to India, where she was deeply affected as she experienced the harsh realities and living conditions of that country. She was left with a burning desire to help others, and to make a difference in the world. That experience, along with her college studies in behavior modification, contribute to making Karyn the trainer she is today. Much of what drives Karyn is her commitment to saving pets lives. Too many dogs and cats are relinquished by their owners because of behavioral issues that were not dealt with effectively. Karyn has discovered numerous opportunities to be instrumental in the field of pet training through her own inventive solutions. A key way in which Karyn measures her own success is by finding needs and filling them. Her business today, Garvin s Pet Plaza, represents an integrated group of businesses, each one offering unique solutions to create harmony between people and their pets. Karyn prays that this book will fill a need in people s hearts for years to come. You can help her help others by sharing it with your friends. Thank You!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired July 12, 2010

We all have had challenges in our lives. Karyn shares her personal story in such an honest way. Her love of animals has driven her career as a dog trainer. Her experiences with Erika (her first dog) are such a comfort to me. The bond we develop with our animals is so special, their unique unconditional love is constant in a chaotic world. I felt once again reassured that the bond we develop with our animals will continue beyond this life. Thank you Karyn for sharing your story with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Healing heart; Open heart June 30, 2012
By Pat LLC
This is the book which helped me to move past my grief and to celebrate all that my furry friend, Cody, was to me. The author draws on her personal story of canine and human relationships to offer comfort at the loss of a beloved dog and to offer a positive and empowering way forward. I strongly recommend this book for anyone going through pet loss and grieving and especially if they are thinking of bringing another furry companion into their life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dogs Are Unconditional Love June 26, 2011
This book is 50% about dogs and 50% an autobiography of Karyn's initial struggles with her alternative lifestyle. It obviously took great courage for her to write this book. From a very young age, Karyn knew she just didn't fit into the boy/girl type of relationship. Her struggles tell you the emotional pains she went through, wondering if she was crazy, even having thoughts of suicide to end the confusion. In the 1960s, as she explains, there was virtually no acceptance from anyone--only judgment. She sometimes hoped something would just take her life and end her torture. She also explains how she self-medicated with pot, to dull the pain. She obviously went through quite a hard time until she was finally able to accept herself--Not so easy to have the courage to choose a different path than most.

Her love for her wonderful German Shepherd, Erikka, was likely what kept her going. She explains about the painful loss of beloved Erikka one day as well as her experiences with other dogs that she loved. Karyn explains that dogs provide an unconditional love that just does not seem to be demonstrated with humans. Erikka provided Karyn with that love when she was pretty much alone and needed that support the most. Karyn was knocked down many times, but drew the courage to get up and keep going.

With a strong belief in God and Jesus, she pursued through real hard times and became a professional business woman and dog trainer for now more than 33 years.

This book is valuable to anyone who seeks to understand that dogs provide unconditional love and that it is not necessarily an easy choice to live against what society considers "normal".

And, yes, from my own experiences, I have no doubts that "Dogs Do Go To Heaven".

4.0 out of 5 stars Karyn's Journey May 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Death necessarily makes most people think about what comes next. Karyn's book sensitively teaches an unexpected, wonderful truth: God does care and walks with us through the details of life -especially in the trials.
In her book, Karen tells how He uses his wonderful creatures and the people in her life to reveal himself to her. Karyn shares her love of dogs in a way in which we can see her journey and how she came to trust in His unconditional love in all the circumstances of her life. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dogs Do Go to Heaven! April 27, 2011
This was a very ejoyable read about a life long love of dogs and the trials and tribulations that were involved in getting Karyn where she is today. In a book of this subject, you always expect the sad realization of losing a beloved pet. The way Karyn wrote her book helped get me (the reader) through that sad part of her life knowing that her beloved Erikka was in a better place. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever loved or now loves their canine best friend. Thanks Karyn for giving me insight into what makes you who you are today.
