5.0 out of 5 stars I will read this over and over!
What a truly wonderful book. I was often moved to tears while reading it. A word of advice to anyone who reads it is that you skip the Prologue until after reading Chapter 12 (up to page 171). I fortunately never read these so had skipped it and was so glad I did. Had I read it first I would have already known everything that would happen and wouldn't have been able to...

3.0 out of 5 stars A Compellingly Powerful Tale That Will Change You
This is a beautifully-written book that covers unique ground in the dog-human relationship arena. I fell in love with it, and, as other readers have mentioned, I found I couldn't put it down.

Karen, like Dorothy, gets swept up in a tornado that dumps her on Oz. She has to make a difficult journey through a strange land, in hopes of finding the wizard with...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story!, May 31, 2006
With the popularity of dog memoirs, it's hard to know what's worth your time or money. If you like books that paint the dog as wrong, incorigable, untrainable, or owners as alpha know-it-alls or instant experts, this book is not for you.
If you enjoy a great read that also happens to be a great dog story, full of heart and incredible twists and turns, you will find Dogs of Dreamtime well worth your while. This book has earned a place on my "keepers" bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars If I could give this 10 stars, I would., June 10, 2006
For anyone who's done a lot of learning and growing with their dogs, and handled the inevitable curve balls thrown along the way, you'll totally relate, and smile and nod with recognition.
This is a book that will get you laughing and crying and thinking, and loving your dogs more than you already do.
A book not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories of love and commitment, January 13, 2006
Dogs of Dreamtime is a wonderful story full of love and commitment between Karen, her dogs and her family. If you want to read a book that you can't put down and one that
makes you both happy and sad than this is the one for you. Karen makes her stories come alive and you may see yourself in one of her chapters. In reading what she went through with her beloved dogs shed some light on similar events in my life that were painful and left me wondering if I had done the right thing. There are many challenges and victories we all face with our dogs and this book gives much insight on problem solving.
I hope there will be a sequel as wonderful as the first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, May 6, 2006
Loved this story. It tells of the heartbreaks and hardships of dog ownership. Of an owner learning along the way and finding peace with the decisions she has made.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dog memoir I've ever read, October 28, 2005
Dogs of Dreamtime is a love story that involves the salvation though not necessarily in the way one would traditionally think) of three dogs, and a woman. It's what's required to get to the point of their differing salvations that makes this story so gripping. These dogs come into Shanley's life and take her on an incredible emotional journey. She comes to understand much about herself, and about what the love for a dog does to someone. There are some hard lessons along the way that, in the end, transform Shanley. This book reads like an odyssey that sweeps to its amazing conclusion in a way that will leave you feeling both worn out and exhilarated. An inspiring, and ultimately uplifting story. If you love dogs, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars More than another dog story, April 28, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There are many wonderful stories about relationships between humans and dogs. I was expected another one of that genre. But, it has a few unexpected and extraordinary elements worth noting: (a) A profound sense of spirituality that never becomes preachy, and (b) A focus on the delicate intricacies of navigating a relationship with a spouse or partner, in which one is more connected to dogs than the other. Both these elements made this tale a particularly meaningful one. I read it in a single day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good story that's really well written, June 20, 2006
Just finished this book and stopped back to buy a couple more copies for friends. Now everyone is entitled to their opinions--even German girl--though I wonder what ax she has to grind, but don't believe for a second that this book is anything but a beautifully written love story by the author to her dogs. That we get to be flies on the wall, so to speak, is all the better for us. The author's 3 amazing dogs have come into her life to show her what she does and doesn't know about dogs, and what she does and doesn't know about herself. The author rises to the challenge on both counts, and in the end, turns herself into a dog owner worthy of any dog. Loved this book. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Page Turner!, December 17, 2005
This book had me staring at myself at every turn! Shanley has a talent for saying what those of us who have ever loved a dog with all our minds and souls feels. At times this story brought me to my knees, and cleansed so many passed mistakes I had made with my own beloved dogs, at others times I was totally mezmerized with delight. I didn't want it to end, and was left with the feeling that loving a member of another species with such depth and intensity was not only valid, but truly miraculous at a level you have to experience fully to understand. This is a story about love and relationships, and
how we are affected at so many levels. Bravo!
