5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect picture book for group sharing, April 13, 2010
This review is from: Dogs (Hardcover)
I took one look at this book and fell in love. The combination of the great illustrations and the large format make this perfect for group sharing. The rhymes go along at a perfect rhythm for reading aloud and give a nice little lesson in opposites. The illustration of the hairy dog is guaranteed to make anyone smile. There are many picture books out there that take on dogs in all of their forms and functions, but I would say that none do it better than this one. A superb effort that will be going in my permanent story time collection. A huge recommend for toddlers and preschoolers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an amazing simple, but totally engaging book about all kinds of lovable, huggable dogs!, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Dogs (Hardcover)
The kitty cat just loved all kinds of dogs. She liked Great Danes because they are BIG, but she also liked little dogs like the Chihuahua because they are small. "Tough dogs" like bulldogs are loveable, but then again soft poofy dogs like the Bichon Frise are grand too. There are those yippity yappity dogs and dogs that are pretty quiet, laid back, and just hang around. She loved `em all.

Some dogs like the German Shepherd are the rough and tumble sorts who like to tussle with their toys while others like to play quietly with theirs. Gotta love `em! Sheepdogs are as hairy as they come and their hair will fly all over the place while the Chinese Crested dog doesn't have much to spare. There are all kinds of dogs that a cat can love, including the Saluki, the Pug, the Poodle, the Bull Terrier, the Dalmatian, the Dachshund, the Shar Pei, and the Jack Russell, but there is one kind of dog that the kitty cat does NOT like. Can you guess what kind that could be?

This is an amazing simple, but totally engaging book about all kinds of lovable, huggable dogs. There is a wide assortment of dogs who march their way through these pages, all with different personalities and looks that someone is bound to love. The artwork highlights each dog on a simple cream colored background and nicely brings out their personalities with each stroke of the brush. No spoilers here, but the little twist at the end will bring a smile to your face. If have a dog or are a dog lover, this is one book you simply have to have on your shelves!

Dogs by Emily Gravett is a great pick for dog lovers. My 2 year old grandson has me read it again and again. It also teaches some breeds of dogs through pictures.I would share it with any child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Emily Gravett, awesome as always., March 16, 2010
This review is from: Dogs (Hardcover)
Emily Gravett, Dogs (Simon and Schuster, 2009)

If you're familiar with Emily Gravett already, you've probably got a good idea of what to expect from this one; it's amusing, cute, vaguely educational, and with a twist at the end, though a much gentler twist than usual (no one gets eaten). Gravett's portraits of dogs (there's a breed key on the inside cover) are adorable. A good one for the toddler in the family. *** ½

The children I shared this book with really enjoyed it. Not only are the illustrations adorable and appealing, but the text is short enough to share with the youngest child. In addition to being just fun to read, the book can be used to talk about different kinds of dogs, as well as opposites. The twist at the end is amusing. I wasn't sure the kindergartners would get the ending but they did. They were also more than happy to talk about their own experiences with dogs. A fun read-a-loud on a perennially popular topic.

The book is darling, and I'm sure my youngest grandson will love it. He is into puppy dogs right now. I was surprised that there were no Labs or golden retrievers in the book.
